Is there that much of a difference between these headphones.
I've heard they are supposed to be the same, but the prices are a bit different.

Thanks

those are the mdr-7506's. the ones similar to the them are the v6's. apparently they're not 100% same though, but i cannot confirm that as i've never used the v6's. the v600's aren are a completely different set of cans than either of these (apparently even worse than the v700's).

I have HD280's and although I haven't had any cracking yet, they do look ridiculous on one's head unless you have a 'wide' head. The part with the squishy pad is the only part that rests against your head; the curved parts stick out, and it kind of looks like you're wearing a C-clamp on your head.

They are quite nice (sound-wise), though. If you're worried about how it looks when you wear them, consider the Sony MDR-7506s. I think they can be found for roughly the same price.

Only reason I got the HD280's was because I don't buy Sony.

I have the Sony MDR-7509's and have had really enjoyed them. They look very similar to the picture above, however, I'm not familiar with what the big differences are.

These are what I have:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-MDR-7509HD-Pro-High-Definition-Headphones-MDR-7509_W0QQitemZ180127859768QQihZ008QQcategoryZ14985QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Here is a brief review of the differences that I just found online:
I own both the 7506 and the 7509's and they are very similar in size and shape but when you listen to them side by side you can definitely hear the difference. The dynamic range of the 7509 (5Hz-30kHz) is much better than the 7506 (10Hz-20kHz) and the audio quality just sounds so much more accurate. Of course the range of the headphones (7509) far exceeds both the range of most microphones and some people's hearing abilities so it isn't too much sweat. I actually bought the 7509's for monitoring the music I compose on my Roland Fantom at night when my girlfriend yells at me for playing too loudly, I also have a set of MDR-V600's. (older Sony's) for my camera monitoring backup set. The monitoring circut in the PD-150 is so poor it seems a waste to use a $260 set of headphones to listen to all that static in the camera when a $75 pair will work just as well.
Over at B&H they list all 3 pairs as follows and for the money I would buy the V600's again for the camera. (I was actually unlucky enough to buy all 3 of mine at music retailers and thus paid way too much for them)

MDR-V600 (5Hz-30kHz) $74.95
MDR-7506 (10Hz-20kHz) $89.95
MDR-7509 (5Hz-30kHz) $179.95

p.s. as for hearing your surroundings you can either listen through the video or uncover one ear, I prefer a pair of headphones that fit well and won't be to loose and fall off when I move around and bend down or won't be to tight and give me a headache after 12 hours of shooting. The Sony's have always fit me well which is why I still buy them.

My favorites are:
The HD25s, the HD280 (which I've had for 3 years now some cracking but no breakage), and the V6 and 7506s are very nice as well. I've heard Ultrasone makes a very nice headphone too.

I have 3000's and they have snapped on me twice. I don't abuse my equipment either. Both times they broke from just taking them off my head.

If you bought them from a store close to you that you can return if they snap then it doesn't really matter. I find it has quite good bass response.
