when i said work on your fx i ment the FX on your instruments and drums, but when I was talking about using all your cpu on a single 'effect' i ment whooshs and swoops. just incase you were confused about that..

and i didn't say more compression.

I'm trying to err on the side of making the drums louder but I'm not sure if that's right. Are things too busy when I have the lead going? I like to think that all those other sounds are complementary but I'm never sure.

Well they say mix your kick alittle louder than you think it should be... I don't think things ever got too cluttered in your songs, the mixing isn't bad, just isn't good yet.

I know how you feel, I felt the same way when I found this site a year after i started making techno in fruityloops, which was 4 years into production for me.. (i used cakewalk with romplers (triton, proteus) before that.) It can be discouraging, but hopefully it'll make you work even harder.

I believe your problem is that you're wasting all your time thinking about process instead of just making tunes.

Doesn't matter what creative discipline you're in - music, art, engineering - talented and experienced people never follow a predefined process, and are constantly fighting against the great horde of mediocrity who insist that the discipline can be improved with a rigid process. Maybe it can, for the unskilled.

Maybe I'm being too harsh, but you just shouldn't have to ask or even think about these questions. If the answers don't come naturally, you're doing it wrong.

Actually the amount of time I spend thinking about process is very small compared to the amount of time I spend making tunes. I make 3-4 songs a week (and actually pursue maybe one in depth). I have no respect for the genre boundaries that some people depend upon. I know few if any people have actually listened to what I put up here but I don't think it's cookie cutter trance.

It's only when I figured out that there was something missing from my tunes that I took a break to type up these questions that I asked.

My natural inclination is to follow my intuitions. I think I can trust my intuitions for the basic melody lines and structures of my songs. Right now, I've run out of ideas for pads, FX, and what to do special to build tension before the beat drops.
