DJing was around before disco, it was just the crossfading (which eventually became more sophisticated with beatmixing and harmonic mixing) with mixers..that came around the late 70s with disco. Not all DJs crossfade or "mix", you can still be a DJ and not do that stuff...DJing is ultimately about playing music.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Marshall Jefferson still spins, and he's been around since house music was invented. In fact, he was instrumental in the whole invention of the genre as I understand it.

Frankie Knuckles is still DJing. So is Francois Kevorkian (been DJing since the 70's).
