Why the dig at laptop DJs? I haven't seen many myself, but I bet everyone here has been bored stiff at one time or another by DJs who use conventional equipment.
Heya,
Sorry you will have to forgive me, just had my ear talked off this weekend by a group of guys last Friday, by a group of young DJs trying to convince me of the virtues of laptop DJing, presenting themselves as the shit, only to be beaten down with a 4 hour display of complete self indulgence and playing to nobody except themselves.
It's the turntablist in me that refuses to accept that this is anything other than a short cut to true skill.
I do have an objective side, but due to lack of sleep and too much work plus a few too many JD's and coke last night you will have to forgive my ill prepared outburst. You point is well put and you are right on the laptop issue.
But I never regarded Timo Mass as being techno. Good producer, but not techno, but I could be wrong there also.

ok
He's definitely put some tracks out that I'd class as techno, but I don't think on the whole you could class him as a techno producer.
Nearly all of the techno I play ends up being from producers I've never heard of and never hear of again - it's amazing how many producers (maybe they're just aliases, who knows) just pop up and put out a wicked track that I love then you never come across them again.
A few producers who I've been consistently buying tracks by though:
Christian Fischer
DJ Murphy
Wehbba
Cave
Stephane Signore
Olivier Giacomotto
Axel Karakasis
and I think they're about the only people I've bought more than 1 track by in the last year!!

Since I seem to disagree with most people's definition of good techno producers (going by the responses here.. Cave? Eric Sneo? Preach? Marco Bailey? Come one now..) here's a little list of my own:
The Advent
Inigo Kennedy
Grovskopa
James Ruskin
All of them have shown great versatility in their releases, plus they've got what it takes to impress me live, be it with a DJ set (though I'm talking about producers here) or a live set.
i wouldnt really call marco baily and some others in here that ...

Marco Bailey used to be the king of funky techno... unfortunately he's gone minimal now.

It's definitely gone downhill lately. Granted, there are still pretty decent releases to be found every now and then, but they're few and far between. Too many good producers (and I personally think Marco Bailey isn't one of them, but that's another thing altogether) have jumped on the schminimal bandwagon.
Personally, if you're looking for decent funky techno, I'd recommend downloading a few sets by Kammy. She's a pretty talented Brazilian DJ. Enough sets of her to be found on the www.livesets.com forums.
