I liked Mushishi, and the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya. I haven't really paid attention to anything being released this year since there doesn't seem to be anything good playing in japan at the moment.

i almost bought the ghost in the shell SAC box set but decided i should save money instead. watched the first couple of episodes of ergo proxy but cant find that on dvd. i prefer stuff with robots but havent watched a whole lot of series or anything. i think patlabor needed more fights, too much cop investigation stuff. i liked neon genesis when i watched it on sbs years ago but i missed a couple of episodes near the end and have no fucken idea wtf was going at the final episode and the movies. umm yeah. never watched any gundam stuff, what should i start with? same with macross, i have the robotech remastered box but i havent seen any other macross stuff.
Was tryna think of the other awesome gundam series-- i lent it to a friend, so i couldn't remember it's name, and that's the one--
I'm not a huge mecha fan: more into sci-fi, and samurai/historical shit myself... GITS:SAC is ok... didn't find it particularly special myself, compared to the original movie, and the manga series...
I thought patlabor 1 was a frikkin maad film: it's not an action film, but the plot is wikkid-- really well-made film.
I reckon neon genesis is overrated to be honest: it was just one of the original "break-through" anime titles that made the west recognise anime, so everyone kinda liked it... nothing special compared to other works.

they spend too much time and effort on the drawing, and not enough on making a plot that isnt fucking stupid.

It's the same story with live-action films world over tho, some films have lame-no plot, if it's intended for kids, or if it's just an action flick, but some still do... syriana for example compared to Transformers-
You obviously havn't seen much anime tho-- Watch\read "deathnote" and you'll take that back immediately-- I've had a number of friends who couldn't keep up with the incredibly fast-moving plot, and numerous sub-plots of this awesome show/comic-- really awesome.... go now-

youre right, i havent watched that much. mostly coz i find the plots to be too crazy/stupid. its like they think "ooh, it would be cool to have a character be able to do this" then contrive some nonsense around that character so they can indeed do it.
i havent seen any anime that was as cool and thoughtful as robotech or astro boy.

haha, it is a bit like that: but i guess the enjoyment stems from your ability to way-lay the "real world"-- that's the joy of animation- that you can beak the conventions of the normal world... For me anime is mainly about characters: the plots are usually pretty crazy or surreal, but the characters are always incredibly human: so it's just like seeing how a person would act if X happened, rather than watching X manipulate a character's (who we may not even care about) world, like in live-action stuff...

i hated anime a few years ago as well. it seemed so childish, but there are some cool bits in it.
i dont watch it for intellectual stimulation by any means, it replaces me watching crappy TV shows like Greys Anatomy, House, Lost, Heroes, Supernatural, Ugly Betty.. you get the picture. Anything thats on 7, 9 and 10 basically.

i love animation too, in terms of its freedom to do anything (ie the fantasy genre) and yeah, i like the characters too. but the overall plots just seem a little bit weird for me. so much promise, little delivery.
lol @ gumble. man you watch some shit mate
battlestar galactica is the only show peeps. get into it, its awesome.
