Music does sound subjectively "better" to most people when played loud.

But there is an important distinction between "played loud" and "made loud." Some people seem to have forgotten that there are volume knobs on stereos.

I got Terry Grant - I'll Kill You off Beatport when it first came out and it clips really bad. I forget whether it was the original mix or Luke Chable's mix.

Seems that stuff purchased off Beatport can be a problem. I've had a couple of tracks bought off Beatport that have clipped and generally been off poor sound quality - most recently Dominik Eulberg "Bionik" - listened to it once and immediately deleted it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, because my knowledge of mastering etc is pitiful, but I have been using this program for a few years to normalise all my mp3s.

It analyses a group of mp3s, detects clipping, then normalises them all to 89.9dB, or whatever level you want - all losslessly.

It works fine for me, and does actually seem to fix clipping, of which about 30% of the files I feed into it seem to do.

thats a good program, i used to use it alot.
problem is, it only works on maximizing tracks that dont clip already.

if a track is clipping, the data for the part of the waveform that is clipping is not recoverable.

I see.

Still, I like to normalise all my mp3s so that if I forget to use my gains at all during a set, it won't be so noticeable.

Thing is, they only sell the products that have been provided to them by the labels, so there's nothing they can do to it, really. You'd need to start contacting the labels.
