You don't need to know how to physically dance, but you should know what makes you want to dance. When you're at an event as a spectator, what makes you start moving your body? What makes you walk back to the bar? What makes you nod your head or tap your feet to the beat? A good DJ doesn't need to know how to dance him/herself, but will know what makes people dance.

I definitely think someone who is a good dancer will make a better deejay than someone who is not with the same level of practice and experience.

I know am a little esoteric here, but I believe there is more or less a secret sensual knowledge of the body/mind/soul that is gleaned through dance. I don't mean bobbing around recklessly, I mean dance as a measured expression and sensual, rhythmic transformation of the body.

Someone who holds this almost spiritual knowledge of his position and velocity in space, the sensual, conscious instantaneous experiential knowledge of his inner and outer worlds holds a very special innate knowledge and understanding of music as well, and I feel this allows one to drop it proper

i highly recommend to anyone who does not know how to dance to take some classes.

Ahh the good old Jesus pose

I think it was Blank & Jones? Also did the 'Jesus Pose' in the mix at some performance.

Anyways, No.. It's definately not required to be able to dance to be a DJ. Quite the opposite infact.. BUT you know your doing a good mix if even your getting into it

but damn, that armin picture is just simply ridiculous there's not even a crowd, and he's not even looking up. It is nothing BUT a crossless christ imitation.

If you're gonna do it, do it properly... there was a flyer for a Renaissance night back in 2001-ish with Alex P dressed up as Jesus on a cross. If only I could find a picture...

I think you can be a good DJ without dancing, but if you can dance, you can relate to the crowd better. Dancing around a little while mixing can help you maintain the beat better (at least it does for me) and if you find yourself getting tired, it's probably time to bring give the crowd a bit of a break too.

...Just refrain from the Jesus pose.

(for anyone who doesn't know that story, about 10 years ago a photo of Paul Oakenfold DJing somewhere-or-other was published in one of the major UK clubbing magazines whereby the negative had been printed in reverse... the magazine received a shower of letters and emails asking if Oakey had his own custom-built left handed turntables)

tooootally agree with u man.

even though i dont have formal dance training, i LOVE to move my body and have developed my skills through practice and using bits and pieces from watching other people.

that being said, there's only a certain amount of moving you can do behind the decks without knocking into something...
