Find yourself a copy of the Dell OEM Windows XP - Dell, Asus, HP, and some other big vendors use what's called SLP, "system locked preinstallation". The OEM versions of WinXP check the system BIOS for a license and activate automatically, since the OEM has already paid for the license.

Dell might be nice enough to send you a copy, but you may be able to find one on the net. They'll probably gladly mail you one if you threaten to return the laptop.

I've been running Vista for about a week and have not experienced a single problem. Infact, this annoying bug I used to get constantly in Cubase on XP (thread on here) has dissapeared haha.
