I love going back over old records (electronic and otherwise) and seeing what I was listening to and enjoying at this point or that in my life, no matter how wretched my taste at the time may have been.

So true. It's especially true now that nearly all music is purchased online. You have a two-minute clip (at the most) to judge the entire track. I've bought many-a-track that sounded good from the clip, but when a guy it and listen to the whole thing, it sounds like shit.

I've also had the reverse be true where the sample clip sounded like crap so I don't buy it. But then, it just so happen that I have a friend who bought the track and it sounds great when I hear it in its entirety.

On the flip side, sometimes I go back through my music and find a new appreciation for stuff that I didn't really care for at first. But yeah, there are also a lot of times where tracks get really old really quick. Sometimes I get lucky and realize that before I end up buying them. I know for sure I've got some stuff in my crate on Beatport that's not going to make the final cut.

I really only use my own judgment on what tracks I buy and play, but that's not to say that I don't listen to other people. Let's face it - there's a lot of good music out there and you won't be able to discover all of it on your own.

i normally listen to a track loads of times before i buy it ive only got 1 or2 tracks in my cd wallet that id prefer not to have.

Well, whenever I'm spinning out somewhere, I never seem to have a problem with putting on a diverse set that spans my collection. It's more of a personal problem, I guess. It makes it hard to be personally satisfying, even if the set in question turns out to be something that other people love.

I think what I just need to do is go back through my whole collection and reconnect with it a bit. Right now, playing out of two full sized CD wallets (with 8-10 tracks per disc), it's starting to get a little bit overwhelming. On one hand, it's very useful to be at a gig and have hundreds and hundreds of tracks with you (especially so at a recent 4 hour set of mine), but on the other, it makes it hard to keep up with everything, and you end up just flipping to your first couple of pages of most recent tunes as the track that's on begins to run out.

Back in the vinyl days* things were easier--you spend the evening before your gig going through your collection and picking the records you wanted to bring with you. You took only what you wanted/needed. I guess that made it tough to do 4+ hour sets though.




*yes, I know vinyl isn't dead and gone, I'm just referring to the days where it was the only option.

I know exactly how you feel. At gigs, I find myself only playing my newer tracks because they're all grouped together in the CD binder and they're fresher in my memory.

Yeah that's pretty annoying. I wish they had longer samples.
