The way I've always had my synths hooked up is via MIDI interfaces. The synth/controller goes into the MIDI in of the MIDI interface. Then to send the notes to the JP8080, go from the MIDI out of the MIDI interface to the MIDI in of the JP8080.
Then in Cubase, set up a MIDI track, find your MIDI interface's input and select it as the input, then find your MIDI interface's output and select it as the output. Then select MIDI channel 1 (I'm assuming the JP8080 is set to channel 1). Hit the "monitor" button so Cubase will send the MIDI signals through.
Then create an audio track, select the audio input the JP8080 is coming in on. Hit the "monitor" button on this track as well so you can hear the audio coming in.
Then the controller should be playing the JP8080 just fine. If not, read the JP8080 manual regarding MIDI implementation, these synths all seem to have various MIDI modes you can select. Find one that works!
But in general, controller -> computer and computer -> synth. That way you can send MIDI files out to the JP8080 and play around with the sound while the notes are playing. You don't want to have to play it in real time all the time, surely?
