trippy thread. yeah i have actually heard distant melodies while producing, but i actually hear them out load not in my head. i still don't know what's causing it but it usually sounds pretty cool. i figured maybe tale ends of delays and revebs making notes/chords with each other. either way i try to recreate the sound with and actual synth, but while i'm trying to recreate what i'm hearing i lose it then can't hear what i was hearing before.

Sometimes I hear a bassline thats not intended to be there when the kick and un-EQ'd synths collide.

your ears hear things all the time that your mind doesn't perceive. i guess what you do end up perceiving is a combination of what you want to hear, and what your used to hearing. if your used to hearing only one thing i would think you decrease your chance of hearing the "magic melodies" speaking to you. different people will hear different "magic melodies" from the same tune.
i listen to tunes other people have made and start to hear things that aren't really there because i think they should be. then i take the "magic melody" i heard out of another song and start a track with it! sometimes also a great way to come up with an idea you like is to stream internet radio in the next room and close the door so its muffled to the point that the original song is unidentifiable. then take what your hearing and start a track from that.

Hi greg yeah i to have had this. Its great esp when you make something work. havent had it in a while since i havent made trance in ages not saying it only works with trance. Been making house lately which it has happened with that but not so much, prob due to trance having more delay swooshy melodies etc.
I believe this happens mainly because the different notes from melodies that stand out i.e. if they are louder or more defined in certain parts of the song end up playing together. Since all layers have to play in harmony to make a track sound together and in key this is why you can hear these undertones if ya like.
I guess its similar when you layer pads, if you layer 2 then add a 3rd with a different chord progression it alters the feel and vibe making it sound more uplifting or sad if im making sense?
