I'm surprised that anyone would put a limiter on the master during the production and mixing process for the exact reason it would hide any clipping. Surely its better to see how much, if at all, the track is clipping, rectify the problem with equing/compressing seperate tracks, THEN put a limiter on afterwards.

This post is obviously aimed at those who said they put a limiter, not those who said they put a compressor with light settings.

because I don't want to hear clips while mixing. Duh.

It helps if you turn your monitors up 6dB to compensate for the lack of loudness while mixing.

It kind of depends on what I'm aiming for. On a bit more techy stuff a limiter on the master can do magic for me.

In general I don't do any compression on the master output though.
Subtle compressions the master can really do magic as well, make everything blend well and interact with eachother.

Anyway, if it sounds good it is good. No matter how you've done it.

yeah but how do you know whilst mixing, if clipping is occuring, which indicates a fault in the mixing

the only "fault" with recording is if it sounds like shit. a quick duck from a limiter on the off chance of peaks lining up and going over 0dB isn't going to make a bad impression. but you definetely dont want to push into the limiter.

Why are allot of you mentioning using a limiter. The post clearly states "Compressor". I would definitely not be using a Limiter on the master bus during the mix stage. A limiter is pretty much a compressor with a huge ratio something like 25:1, that will affect the dynamics of your track drastically. If you are using a compressor on the mix bus, nothing more then 1.5:1, even maybe 2:1 ratio MAX. It's good experimenting with anything none the less. I'm glad to see so many good responses on this topic.

Post mix-down, I like to run it through an analog tube compressor to add some warmth.

Now that's what I call a "tube compressor".
