I'd say get reason, you'll get the hang of it in no time and you can rewire if need be. [ wait for reason 4 tho ]

I'd definately go for logic. I've never used logic, but if its anything like comparing cubase to reason, I find things like logic/cubase much much easier. Actually, I just hate reason.

Problem 1: Reason has no audio capability, so if you want to use any external synths or record any audio (guitar, vocals etc) your stuffed.
Problem 2: no vst support, which means that your stuck with the reason synths, which may give your track a sound like every other reason user, especially if your new.
Problem 3: the editing options are impossible (for me at least) the editing section of the interface is miniscule compared to cubase/PT/Live/logic.

I don't recommend buying software because you think you sound crap. So if you like FL then stick with it and run bootcamp like Lolo said. But I really don't recommend reason.

Look at ableton live for something easy and flexible, but download a copy of each to work out what you actually want, its the only real way to know...

I do know that Cubase and Logic are very widely used by producuers and audio professionals in the field. They are generally considered a standard part of the music production arsenal. If you are a professional you will have naturally discovered the more advanced software like Cubase or Logic. I have never used either of them, to tell you the truth. I started off in FruityStudio and also grew weary of the sounds coming out of it. That's when I discovered Reason.

The interface is based entirely on the concept of rack mounts and hardware. This creates a nice work flow for organizing sounds and instruments. Outside of a wave editer, there's little Cubase or Logic can do that Reason cannot. Reason does not support VST because it is a stand-alone application that runs the way it should all the time. If you design it to run with VST it could compromise the stability and overall performance of Reason. I have been using Reason for nearly 4 years and had only 1 or 2 instances where it has frozen or misbehaved. Ever. If you want to use VST, you will have no problem using ReWire to achieve that.

As far as sequencing and editing goes, there are plenty of videos or help files for using the Reason sequencer. It can be cumbersome if you aren't familiar with all of the parameters. Each knob or parameter is fully programmable in Reason, with great effect. I still have not fully used all of the parameter control because there is so much! There are many different ways to attain sounds, and many different steps you can use to change or manipulate the sound. Reason has everything you would expect from a world-class DAW and more. =]]

In closing, you may just want to smoke some weed and fuck around with these fantastic applications. The Reason website has plenty of information about their program and you can also get tons of information about artists who use it. Steinberg is equally tentative. If you understand the basics of music production you'll have a fun time creating sounds either way. It takes many, many years and thousands of hours to become anywhere near "decent", so don't get too far ahead of yourself.

Reason is a fantastic application. It is easy to master and most importantly it is the most fun application to make beats with! If you are starting out this is the program to get.
Great for coming up with ideas!

I have logic and I have reason and I also use a few hardware synths.
I start everything in reason. I use it as a preproduction enviroment.
A ''songwritting tool''
In songwritting mode I do not want to worry about mixing at all.
I want good sounding presets and a nice interface to import all my drum sounds and everything. All I need is a step sequencer to get the beat popping and then lay down the bass the lead the pads and everything all sound on sound and I will worry about the technical shit ...

In production stage:
Once I get the whole track layed down I bounce the tracks indevidually as audio. I export the main midi file and open logic where I import the audio files and the midi files and begin the process of getting everything to glue together.
I use the q10 and the logic and waves effects.

Some tracks from reason make it to the final mix.
But some tracks never make it to the final mix. They get replaced by tracks I track from the triton or the virus synth or other NI and logic plug ins.

Once I get the tracks I want I begin the mixing process eqing and all that.


I find this method better, faster and more productive...
Reason is great for writting songs and coming up with ideas logic is great for engineering
mixing those tracks and turning those ideas into a great sounding mix.
