True enough. For me half the fun of production (maybe even more) is the process of synthesizing all the sounds myself (except percussion), so I usually stay away from anything that takes away from that. Each to his own, though.

Roland JD-800 or 990

Classics for strings and such sounds

They are more romplers in boxes than synths (kinda like the spectrasonics stuff)

As far as i know there are no sample cd's with the sounds from these or software versions.

Mad really because if Roland made software versions of there classic romplers they would be very popular

I second that...

That said... a jd 800 has 12mb of waveform rom. And it does wonders, even today... Something to think about.

I used to love atmosphere and all. But today, I got rid of that, and I stay away from those huge romplers when it comes to making synth sounds.

I got rid of all preset sounds too. This way I really enjoy making my own patches.

Romplers are good at acoustic sounds, still. Symphony of voices is a good example.

I dont like presets either

But i think the key to using presets and romplers is by layering them or just using them as a starting point

Atmosphere is pretty nice in the way it lets you combine 2 of the pre sampled sounds, then set up evolving filters and other modulations. Good results come from going that 1 step further than those people who just use the preset without any modification

oh sure, atmosphere is a very good one, no doubt. Just made more sense to me getting rid of it when I discovered that the waveforms I was using the most were a few kilobytes...

x3

Arguably the best synth ever for pads and textures.
