actually, I did a little quick research, and for a 3-year lease on a bare bones, starting price Hummer H2, you're paying at least $18,000 per year on a 3-year lease. At 15,000 miles, that means about $1,100 extra for another $1 raise in gas prices. Meaningless.

lol research, its great that your trying to prove a point and all but i dont care.

I don't care that you don't care.

Anyway, despite my attempts to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, I'm coming closer & closer to being convinced (by force) that women really are bad drivers, in general.

It's to protect them from men with with 4WD's that are either compensating for something or just overly aggressive road users. Think of it as an road/arms race being funded by suburban failures who are frustrated with their lives.

The suburban ones aren't the ones buying them just for show. They're buying them for the cargo space & safety. The people buying hummers to drive a couple hundred miles a year in major cities are the ones with the image issues. It's no different from buying sports cars, though. It's unnecessary, but if that's what you like, so be it.

No one's really intimidated by the 50 year old guy with the toupee and mid life crisis in his Porsche sitting up your ass at 120km/h, he's irritating and a joke but he's more likely to be the loser in a collision so no one pays them much heed. Having someone riding your ass in 3000kg of 4WD, much different story if you're just in a sedan or smaller vehicle, because you're going to have a really bad day (if you live) in the same collision.

As for space and cargo, nothing beats a people mover or station wagon and it does the same job much better on surfaced roads, some of them are quite good and drive as well as a sedan with all the nice comfy things in them.

actually, a lot of SUVs do beat station wagons for cargo.

SUVs are basically trucks with more seating. In places where people need trucks, it's just a natural progression. People are intimidated by mid-life crisis man, because he's probably driving a lot faster than your average person, and is more likely to crash (there's a reason why the insurance rates on sports cars are much higher).

If people want safety & storage space, and it's perfectly legal, there's no sense in holding a grudge or getting angry about it.

Combine that with a cellphone and the ability to tune out the three screaming kids in the back and your looking at an insurance claim.
Around here its like the cool thing to have...a lifted truck that never goes off road, and if it did it would fail. Men and women in these things are nuts. I almost get ran off the road on a daily basis because they dont check mirrors or use blinkers. They just drift into the lane and force the other cars to backdown. I dont, I wail on the horn and get them to make a fast adjustment. Around here at least, its not just 4WD trucks....its the majority. Ive seen people doing toenails while going 60mph, shaving, makeup, reading the paper at 80mph and of course the phone/texting.

I like both SUVs and small cars.

At one point I'm just going to have to own one of each.

The speedy road-demon side of me loves small, fast, manual cars. The I have two dogs, a boyfriend, and am eventually going to start a family side of me loves the SUV to pack all those bitches in the car. That and it's much more comfortable to travel in a big ass SUV vs the tiny sports car.

I'm not getting angry about it, I just don't want to die to some pin-dick who's sole purpose on the road seems to be to bully other road users and never takes their off road vehicle off road. As for safety, I'm of two opinions about 4WD's. They're good on unsurfaced or very rough roads, however they have very poor road holding when it comes to high speeds, corners and you can do what you want to them to try and improve it. But they're still at the mercy of physics.
Safety is quite subjective to the self it seems, no one thinks of what happens to the people you might happen to hit, they're not safe.
It's harder to pull up 2-3000kg than it is to do the same with 1500 and you can't do much except lower the vehicle when it's mass is much higher, that defeats the purpose of having a 4wd, which is ground clearance.
People movers do a good job, they hold a lot of people, cargo and they're not just a converted van chassis any more.
