It helps a great deal actually towards a healthy credit rating, I still have a credit card for that reason and fairly much only that reason for channelling regular things like bills directly into the card, that way they get paid immediately = good credit and then pay it immediately before they have a chance to accumulate a lot of painful interest, I pay it on time = good credit.
Plus it sort of encourages conservative spending habits and a certain amount of responsibility, which if you don't have and can't afford the fees or interest, be rest assured the credit card company will beat the living tar out of you forever and a day.
Like most tools, there's a means to using them correctly to your advantage and probably several ways to maim yourself horribly with them.
