(only rules no noobs saying elitist, no elitist saying noobs...asot and all of that crap. Lets keep it clean i would like this to be a serious thread.) That being said i will start.

1. The Bedroom DJ name drop. I hit a tad of a production block this weekend, and to take a breather I decided to listen and review a few sets of many genres in the DJ promotion section. Low and behold i see over and over the one thing I cannot take. What is with people when they only add a few extra mesures in the beginning and the end of a track....doing absolutely nothing else and then doing..(dj blabla edit) Is this based on some insecurity? An edit actually is something that significantly alters the track from its original form. Simplifying mixing by adding takes 2 seconds and isnt one. Am I the only one who thinks its a little ludicrous? I understand people might want to feel important or I don't even know...It just perplexes me. I sometimes see these Dj's chart their own edits and put [CDR]...like wtf.

That felt good...feel free to add on my point, or bring one up of your own. I think this might be a very interesting thread if it is kept clean.

I totally agree people shouldn't try and claim any praise for something like that.

But you do have the flip side of it... obviously depending on how much editing there is, but I did a demo a couple of years ago and put on a track which had a really cheesy breakdown, so I chopped that chunk out before I burnt the tune. Obviously I didn't really think that warranted putting "Stu Cox edit" or whatever on it(!), but I then got an angry message on MSN from a mate who'd bought the tune after hearing it on my demo, only to find he couldn't play it himself cos it had a ghey breakdown in it! Needless to say I just sent him my edited version, but you can see the point - if your edit changes the track enough, then people might need to know it's not the original.

Although I still don't think I'd label something like that on a tracklist as it was quite a minor bit of editing.

Obviously that's quite different from posting that on a messageboard and saying "check out my r00d edit" or whatever.

Couple of things that git ma goat:

1) ID/Unknown in tracklists. You know full well that it will always be the best couple of tracks in the set & 99% of the time produced by that very DJ who spun the set
2) Short samples of the best bit of the track on digital stores. I've wasted a small fortune on shite before I started listening to 2 or 3 stores samples
3) Labels taking another 6 month to release a track thats been getting caned by the big boys for months already

I've got nasty feeling I could be posting a lot in this thread lol

Matt

I agree. It depends on how much was done - if you added a few beats to the intro, then you shouldn't put anything. If you do something like as you say...where you cut a whole breakdown...that is substantially changing the track, although it takes two seconds and you don't deserve credit for the track. I usually put the full credit to the actual remixer, then put some sort of (slightly edited) or something in that case.

Faaaaaaaaark, tell me about it.

When people write on their myspace "DJ Loser recieved a Casio synth at age 8, and that's when he first fell in love with music, however it wasn't until he reached age 17 that he began to DJ" etc, when it's painfully clear they wrote it themselves.

Example here:

http://www.discogs.com/artist/Steve+Strangis

Gives himself big-ups in third person, then accidentally switches back to first person at the end.

I may actually be wrong and that may be written by a fan of Steve's with a severe mental deficiency, but I don't think so.

the fact that an actual DEMO OF MUSIC won't do you anywhere near as good as doing coke with a promoter.

Agreed, it also pisses me off how some people claim they play heaps of different styles of music when they clearly don't.
