i don't think it will ever go that much farther into popularity than the use of electronic rhythms supporting popular artists. i don't think mainstream music will ever embrace instrumental EDM...

+1

From my experience, most people who listen to mainstream think 'no lyrics = no thanks'.

Yet, I still hear Vangelis' Chariots Of Fire on the work radio.

Electronic based dance music making headway into mainstream listening is hardly a new thing as anyone growing up listening to the various popular bands (INXS, Sinead O'Connor and U2 come immediately to mind) releasing dubs, club mixes, extended versions and so on. Which have your typical big 4-4 kick, bass groove and minimal vocals to make them popular for dance clubs. Trace it back a bit further and you've got early house tracks doing much the same thing by DJ's live with a popular vocal track behind a dance beat, so I really don't see it at a recent development.

Rap music is electronic music.
Pop music excluding rock and such is electronic music.

'EDM' /= only something with a 4-4 beat. Get it through your head. Stop being an ignoramus.

Vast majority of electronic dance music though is 4 beats to the bar, even if it's an even note sycopation, back beat where the snare is on the 1-3 or 2-4.
It's just a non-straightened 4-4 drum pattern.

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy was pretty decent as far as pop goes.

It's a trend, and it will probably go away in a couple years only to re-surface yet again later.

Although I'm not sure club/dance music influences were really ever completely apart from the mainstream. There's always been 1 or 2 pop tracks around with a hint of EDM.

LOL...It get to me too, so now when someone says they like "Techno", I actually talk about Techno...

"I listen to Techno!"

"Techno? Cool. What do you think of Richie's new mix?"

"Richie?"

"Yeah, Richie Hawtin?"

"???"

"You know, Mr.Minimal Techno?"

"Nope. Never heard of him."

"OK, so you're more into the Detroit style sound? I'm a big fan of Derrick May. In fact I just saw him at Chapel Hill..."

"WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!? I like DJ SAMMY and TIESTO...and that Mortal Kombat song. Now that's good Techno!"
