My brother is in a frat, and I've visited a lot, and since I'm going to the same college next year, I plan on joining too.
They are basically a way to establish yourself with a large group of people, hopefully who you can relate to most of.
They aren't for everyone. There is lots of booze. There are lots of women. There are lots of parties with hip/hop and house music. There is hazing, initiation, pledging, and lots of stuff.
But for all the bad stuff, there is a ton of good times to be had. And people don't have stupid shit on their shirts like "the real mccoy", it's just tradition to have knicknames for each other.
It really depends on wha type of person you are if you should join one. They aren't for everyone. But it's a great way to meet lots of people and experience college to the fullest.

Frats.
Reading through all of the replied posts, I wonder how many of you are actually in a fraternity or a sorority. Sounds like a lot of you are stereotyping frat guys which is for the most part true. I myself am a pledge in a fraternity which means that I am in the process of trying to be accepted into the fraternity. I wish I could tell you what fraternity it is, but I'd better not.
So with my knowledge Ill tell you what it's like:
Nowadays, due to strict rules and unfortunate alcohol related deaths, fraternities these days are not your typical "Animal House" fraternities anymore. Nowadays, most fraternities are considered "dry," meaning that they are not allowed to have alcohol at parties, or at any fraternity event. But for the few tradional fraternities like mine that still exist, the social life is unbelieveable. The alcohol consumption is very heavy and the hazing for us pledges is awful, but fun if you learn to never take things personally or seriously. The parties that we throw down are unreal and the girls that come are absolutely gorgeous. We get together with other sororities for social events and from that, we get to meet more beautiful women. The deal with only rap songs at frat parties. . .well, thats true mainly because more ppl are familiar with rap songs than trance songs.
Overall, the purpose of joining a frat is different with everyone. Like any other club or job, you have to prove yourself to the fraternity brothers. If they like you, you're in. If they don't like you, too bad. Sure, they make you do some really stupid things but that's only for them to see how serious you want to be in the fraternity. You don't have to do anything you don't want to do and you can drop out anytime. Some guys join strictly for the booze and the girls. However, being in a fraternity could help you rub elbows with the right person when it comes time to finding a job. The social life just from being in a fraternity is simply unreal and makes college 10 times more fun. Everywhere you go, ppl know who you are and even though that's not important in life, it sure feels nice. Oh yea, the money that you pay to be in the fraternity. Most of the money goes towards the fraternity house, membership dues to to the higher ups, and **ahem, booze. . .
I apologize if this reply is a bit long and sounds like a newspaper article, but I just thought that I'd put in some input.

well I was pledging for a fraternity but I left for various reasons. There good and bads to both sides. The reason I left was due to the frat life is not for me. And yes, the frat life is A LOT different. I spent more than a year in college w/o a fraternity, and I got to see the difference between a frat life and a college life.
But basically what it all comes down to is if a frat life is for you. I found out that it wasnt for me because I rather work hard on my studies since I'm about to hit upper division in engineering instead of partying and delaying my graduation an extra year because I'm required to do a lot of things as an active and flunk my grades. Not only that, depending on the frat you try to join, you will find out that a lot of them are not exactly taking difficult/time consuming courses. THERe ARE exceptions though.
If you already established a secure social life w/o a fraternity and you get initiated thru one, you will find out that you have to choose between the frat friends and your other friends. You're somewhat forced to participate in activities with your frat friends, and in the meantime you lose communication with your other friends. The same thing happens vice versa. But this is generally the case. It isnt like this ALL the time.
so what it all boils down to is what lifestyle do you want to choose? You will have more *FUN* in a frat life, but on the same token it's highly possible your studies will go down. On the same hand, it will be LESS *FUN* in a non-frat life (that is if you like drinking, hot frat groupie-girls, and partying) but you will be able to concentrate more on other activities and your studies. so there's a trade-off.
but if you have some interest and you're in high school plannin on going to engineering, i'd recommend you pledge your freshman year, so you dont get fucked at a critical time in your college life. If you're going to some psych or music major, you can do it anytime. Try it and see.. it could be for you.
