Yeah, if you really miss that BIG sign on almost every page of every firewire gizmo's manual, stating "don't hotswap", otherwise i haven't seen any firewire interfaces taking sledgehammers and smashing your comp to pieces in your sleep

Firewire is hot swappable...

I have an M-Audio firewire audiophile that says "DON'T DO IT", but I had read that's because M-Audio f'd up their design. In any case, it never cause any issues with my Mac's...
