ps. avoid crowd shots if a venue isnt very busy. justin chung should take this advice as well.

pps. you're using a nikon d40. ewwww

thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.

what's wrong with the D40? I'm happy with it so far, it's the lens that I use that I don't really like (night shots or dark places). When the time is right, I'm gonna get the wider lens 18-55mm f2.8.
D40 seems like a good beginner-intermediate camera, suits me as I only use it 1-2 times a week.

Manual is better, I just got lazy with the aperture and shutter speed that night, I switched between Aperture and Shutter priority frequently

Truth of the matter is that I have a crappy 18-55 mm lens, f3.5 that's not very practical with what I really want to get in clubs, I always have to focus manually with this lens. the 50 mm f1.4 won't help me much either because its manual.

A good and logical upgrade would be a 28-70mm f/2.8D like this one here, wider lens=more light gets in (77mm vs 52mm ), so I can make out things better instead of just guessing at it.

i think you have your terminology all mixed up. when you say "wider lens" you seem to be referring to the focal length (ie. 77mm vs 52mm) but the focal length has nothing to do with how much light it lets in. focal length is just the zoom. the aperture is the size of the hole which determines how much light is let in.

as for getting a 28-70mm f/2.8, the wide aperture (f/2.8) is a plus but shooting at 28mm in a packed club isnt very fun. i would suggest getting a wider lens. i use a tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 and its great when you dont have very much room to work with.

i guess you didnt do much research on the d40 in regards to its AF motor and lens compatibility. you would've been better off spending a tiny bit more and getting the canon xti or even the nikon d70/80.

No not you, but most of the others.

Instead of saying "omg so bad blablabla" give him some pointers instead of just instulting his work. It's fantastic to be honest but when you say something is bad atleast give legit helpful hints if you think you're better than him.

Tricia why do we have to be better then him to criticize? for someone to open up a whole new thread with pictures, he must have seen other pic threads - chinamon's, Sasha's, Shaya's, and how up to par they are

anyway, Jay already gave him some guidance, as for the rest of us, we were just honest - pics are dark, blurry, half of the ppl were shot at least fortunate angles, etc.

def needs more practice, and guidance, oh and to be less whinny about criticism

This man went to a club, partied to good music and throughout the night took pics and shared them with the forum. WHY THE FUCK DOES HE HAVE TO BE "UP TO PAR" with the likes of sasha, shaya and jason...the mans just trying to add something to the forum as there was no review and many people wanna see whats goin on at FW and you just belittle him for his efforts. get the fuck over yourself.

and you really think I posted them for the sake of attention whoring? ...com'on now this is getting ridiculous.. I posted them for the sake of the people who wanted them(not everybody wants to give out email addresses) and for you to see how the place was that night, or at least for you to get an idea if you weren't there. The shots weren't all fucked up,at least to say a few of them were decent.

and nor do I dare to compare myself to Jay, Sasha or Shaya, they've been doing this for far longer than I have, they're far more experienced, they know their settings for all these venues;

the point wasn't to promote myself as a photographer (because I ain't near being a good one yet); my work was near terrible for the night, honestly there wasn't much to shoot as the whole night wasn't too great. Well, the tunes were good, that was the only good thing that night, I'm at least happy with that because I go there to chill.

It's all past tense now, I learned new things now thanks to advices/pointers posted here and I'll put it to good use next time.

Jay, I'll be looking into those tamrons for mine, because they are 1/3 of the price of a Nikkor, but I'm still a bit skeptical. thanks for advice you posted here, good pointers, same goes to smucky and terrytutone and the rest.

D80/D70 seem now like a good buy since the lens compatibility issue was brought up to me when I got my 50mm, but hey, if I can work with it, that's all I care. A friend had a D80 and he had problems with it and the quality of shots didn't differ much from D40. I chose to go price wise since, for what I thought would be a good "toy" to have.

and I appreciate your honestly; nor that I bitched at you for being straight forward or bitch at you at all.

where was I ever whining about it? Whatever seemed like whining, it wasn't, I don't do that kinda crap.

Now let's all move on and deal with this like the grown-ups we are, my objective was not to start a silly thread nor to open subject to insults and boycotting.
Let's put this thread to sleep, shall we?

Any other suggestions, pointers and such, please PM me instead.
Thank you and have a good night!
