That's hardly a secret, most of the big DJs get someone to sift through their music for them cos otherwise there's just far too much to listen to. Some are worse than others, yes - I know certain DJs who literally get their entire set list selected by someone else, while some DJs get their record bitch to recommend a load of tunes, or generally just weed out the crap and leave them with a handful of good records.

Someone like Judge Jules for instance is on just about every mailing list known to man, plus gets sent 100s of tracks a week from individual artists hoping he'll play their tracks. All in all you're talking about a couple of thousand tracks every week, from which the best need to be found - do you really blame him for getting Simon Patterson to give him a bit of a hand?

I've actually heard quite otherwise from other people who have worked in radio. These are people who have gone to college and majored in radio broadcasting, both in Canada and the states. After I was told this, I then went on to pay attention to each radio station and noticed that yes, in fact, they do follow these rules.

There are definitely the exception, sure. Special shows where the artist will come in and play, or if they have a reason to play multiple versions of the song back-to-back (say they want to compare cover versions, or are doing a week long promotion where they play their entire playlist A-Z).

The same would also apply to a guest mix. It's a "special" event that differs from regular broadcasting, and as such I would think it's treated differently.

I know it isn't exactly a big secret, but lets face it. Look at the question asked and that tracklisting.(please don't take offense oreo it isnt meant to be one...but your music is noob friendly. That doesn't make it bad or lesser it just is.)Everyone is on a fucking list these days...and truth be told when you push stuff for the sake of pushing it the result will ALWAYS sound like shit.(Been there done that never again) It goes beyond a DJ being lazy, but every track picked these days (mostly and especially if the set is recorded) isn't for the sake of playing a track because it works. The amount of PURE Dj's that are left can be counted on a handful.Off the top of my head , Danny Howells, Burridge (not anymore album to sell),Dave Clarke,Danny Tenaglia (yes he fucking sucks but he sucks in the way he wants to)..and not many more actually do not give a fuck about having to play certain tracks. The idea isn't behind all of these assholes just selling out, its trying to show these young guys they don't have to. Have fun with it, be different and original because lets face it...you aren't going to be the next star.(in reference to original poster and no even you reading this saying ya im going to be big...NO YOU ARENT, no one is going to pay you big bucks to play shit found on beatport.)All of this is what is leading to the demise of the DJ. Sorry if this is long winded and a bit skewed, i'm really tired, trying to get myself mad so I can play techno for the first time in years, and really I'm not that bright.

Someone say fucking Digweed/Sasha/Lawler..i dare them
Its over..Ableton is ushering in a new genration...of LIVE performers not DJ's. People only worship these same guys because they are too ashamed to fucking not to after years of stupidity and finally realizing that after a bit of Practice anyone can do it.

and don't get your hopes up when i said LIVE ableton performers..i meant actual musicians using the sequencer Mutek style...not some Geek pushing buttons to a pre made set and throwing effects onto the main channel like Dea(steve angello)mau5

are you inferring that Deadmau5 == Steve Angello? Or that they have similar styles of playing?

More on note, sometimes its not even a good idea to play two different versions of the same song either, but sometimes it works out really well and some djs do it, for example Sasha played Holden & Thompson - Come to Me (Last version) and the club mix back to back

Everyone and their grandmother plays Deadmau5 now, everyone and their grandmother played Angello 2 years ago. Not to many people feel like playing Angello tracks anymore and he has nicer shoes than you.

and i think what i wrote this morning might have been english, lol.

i've worked in radio, done the college thing, i'm educated

i haven't come across anything of the sort in CRTC and FCC guidelines, however, it could be due to music policies set forth by each individual radio station

because it really isn't all that kosher to play artists in the same block, nevermind the block but the same hour, so it's avoided at all costs

radio stations themselves put forth those policies, not CRTC or FCC

it's policies, not law, so therefore technically speaking you could, you just wouldn't be working for that station very long
