I think Iran's president is BOTH well educated AND intelligent, but like I said, heads of state usually play to a different agenda than the one they make public, it's the only way you can explain a good relationship between (totally random example I know) Tony Blair and George Bush.

Tony Blair is actually a political genius, a gentleman and ran his country very well, yet for some reason took a liking to the biggest failure of a president since Richard Nixon, a president who no one else would touch with a ten foot poll.

They all dance to someone else's tune, not ours... Big business, interest groups and religious groups to name a few.
