I would highly recommend people to download and install this fully functional 30 day trial version of Kaspersky. http://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/. One of the most powerful antivirus in the market these days. That or try NOD32. http://www.eset.com/download/index.php. It's interface is not intuitive but it is also very powerful. I have used them both and I can tell you for a fact that they are awesome.

For various reasons, AVG is ranked well below these two softwares on this review website.

http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

I am no expert, but AVG did not pass or enter the VB100% 2007 certification test, which is a measure of effectiveness I guess.

quote:
The Virus Bulletin 100% is an award given to antivirus software that detects all current “in the wild” viruses during both on–demand and on–access scanning in Virus Bulletin’s comparative tests and generates no false positives when scanning a set of clean files.

Kaspersky and NOD32 both have this certification. In a competitive market if I have to pick one antivirus software over another, I will look upon AVG unfavorably for not having passed this test.

Should have added that in addition to WEP I have MAC address only access. Besides, being in the countryside in Japan doesn`t pose too much of a risk from h4x0rz, at least not serious ones!

My anti-virus is Norton Corporate edition. People moan about NAV, but it`s always worked for me, and I like the Symantec are allowed to write NAV to embed itself in Windows` deep darkest registry where others can`t! (whilst this makes it a pain to uninstall, it means it can detect viruses where other scanners can`t).

Anyway, I`m gonna test out teh intarwebz later and see if the speed is above dial-up. Although it`s neve rnear the 50 meg I`m paying for. Guessing I should`ve gone fibre-optic...

Thanks for your help (so far!)

mac address filtering does nothing. you can easily spoof a mac address. all you need is 2 frames of a network packet and you have a mac address to spoof.

the router isn't broadcasting which mac addresses are accepted (hopefully?) ... so mac filtering is quite good for keeping out people who don't actually have your devices' info ...there's not a ton of people who are so interested in getting into a particular person's wireless net that they are going to try and hammer through 281474976710656 possible values just to get in.

regarding the speed degradation... you should start by finding out the speed your modem is syncing at (get your isp to find out and tell you)... and the length of your phone line (the isp might be able to find this out if they are also the phone company or abnormally competent - otherwise you'll need to get that done through the phone company)

sync rate vs loop (phone line) length is where you should start with speed issues... might lead to an investigation of the loop for possible fault conditions causing the speed drop - or may lead to the isp saying "the modem is getting the proper speed, check your computer out" in which case you are S.O.L
