Just like New York City is radically different from Portland, Maine, not every place in the South is exactly the same. Walk down the streets of Asheville, and then head over to Baton Rouge. Do you feel like you're in the same place?

I live in Hampton Roads, and it has a very mix population. I would say its a bit of both, but southern Virginia has its southern roots. People are not liberal here, but they are also not very conservative. Its a mis. We might have two democrats in the senate, which has not happen in a long time.

It's interesting how when so many people of different cultures and regions are tossed together, a la "mixing bowl" style, many end up polarizing.
The close vicinity and small living environments combined with the speed and stress of living in the tri-state area probably contributes a lot to people's closed-ness and cynicism.
