Neither sound particularly very good.
Stay away from the convertibles though if you're just getting a commuter car, useless things any retard can break into with a pocket knife, get leaky when they're old, hot in summer, freezing in winter.
Just keep looking.

The Corolla is way too expensive for what it is though and the fact that it needs work on top!
What are the specifics of the brake problem anyway? Something like a new master cylinder will cost hundreds, resurfaced disks or pads will be fairly cheap though.

nah nothing major like that
i don't know anywhere near as much as you do about cars
drove it though and there was a shitload of action before the brakes did much of anything. same type deal that happens when a car sits for a few months though

Yeah, mechanics hate me because I know stuff and they can't overcharge
It sounds like the master cylinder (big piston that compresses the brake fluid) with the falling pedal, it might simply need an overhaul.
I don't know, for @2k you're not going to get much anyway, so if you can stretch your search and wallet to a little more to something which isn't a complete beater you'll save that in the coming months not having to fix stuff.

It'll probably be just fine really for running around in, but I just went over the typical problems you have with them in terms of break ins and generally hard to live with outside of 'pleasant sunny weather'

no you sound like someone who needs to pay either nothing for a car, and get rid of it when youre done, or spend more than you need for something that wont die and you can abuse.

a corolla is an excellent choice for longevity, but you need to spend ~4000 for a late 90s or find a miracle 89-90 that has been maintained.

cavalier/sunfires, et al are the end all of rubbish. you WILL pay if you get that car.

to be honest, and i dunno prices now. but early 90s toyota pickups (hilux) may be your best. good in all weather, tho not fun to drive, the engines are great, even if the body, interior is shit. buy oil and it will go as long as you need it to. thats what my pizza roomie had, but he got a bit lucky with the price|

honda products are great, but you also live with road salt, and that can kill most small japanese cars, ie the truck...

They stick it on the roads to melt ice in winter, rots the guts out of cars... literally.
edit- Hilux's are great but they're a little low geared for using on the roads all the time, the diesels are very frugal on fuel and much better than the petrols. However they do need good quality servicing to prevent coking and while the actual servicing is less frequent it is more expensive.
Overall though, if you can kill a hilux through normal driving then you probably shouldn't be near a car!

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, that would be deadly.

Forgive my ignorance. Don't really get that around here. I don't really remember them salting the roads in the UK though, in winter? Though, I suppose it wasn't that cold...

Edit: I actually really want to buy a hilux. Sooooooo useful.
