That should help as far as understanding phrasing. There is also alot of other good info on that site as well for beginner DJs so feel free to have a look around.

One thing that I did to help me get EQ'ing down is listen to a shed load of mixes and find places were the DJ has mixed two songs together that you have and the go and try to replicate what you heard.

I listened to your mix and it was pretty good. In fact, I think my sets after 1 month sounded worse because I didnt start working with EQ until much later. Your beat matching sounds pretty good as well. You definitely need to learn how to phrase though. After that, you can start worrying about tune selection and flow of your sets.

Some of my favourite tunes of the year, especially simon patterson.

With phrasing you'll find after a certain point it comes naturally, and you dont even need to think about it or count in your head. By the way there are also other clues to tell you when a new phrase is coming, a lot of tracks have a whooshing or filter effect before a new phrase comes in.

exactly. Everybody used to tell me to count bars, etc. That really isn't necessary. All you need to do is pick out the clues that will hint you about the upcoming phrase and some knowledge of the tune, you're playing.

That's a nice setup. Mine is rather crappy, compared to that.

I hope this all makes sense, but here goes nothing. First off, when you are listening to the track, you will notice that at certain points, music "changes" or a new instrument is added. Every time, when a new instrument is added, it's a new phrase.

In practice, try pressing play on the 2nd deck right when the new phrase kicks in on the 1st. There are always cues that will tell you that a new phrase is about to come on (cymbal, build up, etc.). If you did it correctly, then your breakdowns, phrase changes should be lined up.

This is phrase matching in a nut shell or at least my understanding of it. I hope it all makes sense. If anybody would like to correct me or add anything, please do so. I've used the method described above and my sets are phrased correctly.

my eq'ing sucks too... it takes time
