References should never be family/friends (unless personal references are requested). if I was hiring someone I would have no clue if a family member was BS'ing me to get that person hired.

Relatives aren't as reliable as some might think. Same reason why they don't like hiring people from the same family into the same company.

actually, the person who referred me was my uncle's wife and she worked there. yeah, that's the situation. its close to what i said.

i just think that this is nonsense. she does live in the same house as me, but come on.

me: "but, she's not biologically related to me. she's just married to my uncle"
manager: "yeah... but we don't hire people who are 'related' if you know what i mean"

Surely if you relative who already works there referred you, it would be beneficial for them to hire someone who they know is cut from a similar mould, and hence has similar values and work ethic etc?

If you're getting a reference for a job and you list a relative with their contact number as a past employer, that's stupid and pointless, but when the relative works at the place you're are trying to get a job and says "hey, you should hire this person..." to the boss, that's a totally different matter.

agreed. I think restaurant jobs would be that best for a student or as a side job. I work as a bus boy at an expensive place and get paid very well. Not to mention the fact that it's very flexible (except for weekends and some holidays of course). Plus you could meet some important people that may help you get the job you want in the future.

Many can't comprehend the future either. Two people I went to school with (my year) are still working the same job they did as teenagers, in the same supermarket, in the same shitty little town. They get paid more now though. Not getting paid junior rates these days, hell no.

living in the same house is a bit different, but often companies will give the employee a bonus or benefit for referring the new hire.

unless there is a bunch of education or outside experience(and even then...), most hires are due to someone knowing someone.

i know tons of hires that never matched that that were released as they were terrible workers|
