how do you think house music and techno started?

hmm, came from disco and euro 80 synth, hmm, kind of pale-ish, with a few exceptions like Rick James but... There is a lack of pigment in EDM still, might have to do with EDM being more mainstream in Europe where there are a lot less people of Color. Look at how they treat soccer stars of color http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racism_in_football

I really only have one black friend who is cultured in edm and yeah there isn't a lot of blacks at EMD shows with the heavy Hip Hop/R&B culture here. In Miami you see a lot more mixed race crowds then here. Just like if you grow up in the sticks like say, I don't know Dacula, you're all about some Country! So if you grow up in the SWATS, chances are, your not going to find many EDM lovers in your neighborhood that will influence and expose you to it. I do think it takes being exposed to the music. For example Sean Combs (P-diddy or what ever his handle is now) goes to WMC each year. Mabey it was J-Lo that exposed him to the EDM? I don't know. Then the next night I saw "the Bus" at Nickie's Beach. So, like some one said b4, exposure to the music is the thing.

Growing up in Tampa definitely exposed me to EDM, since it's on the radio there, and the hip hop was more of the fun, shake your booty stuff, not the shoot up the club stuff that is all I hear out of Atlanta hip hop.

Carl Cox is black. He's also British though, so he's not really black.

House music was pioneered by blacks (Frankie Knuckles, Marshall Jefferson, Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Larry Levan, the list goes on). From House came Acid, and from there came most of the other genres of EDM, including Techno. Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson were pioneers of Techno, and they were both black.

I think the lack of blacks at events comes more from a lack of knowledge on the history of the music than on a dislike for the music. If more people knew about the history of this music, then maybe we could get more exposure for the black community. To a lot of people that I talk to, they think that Hip-Hop is the only modern form of African-American music out there, and that EDM is just made by a bunch of white European guys.

JitteryJoe: When I heard that P.Diddy was releasing a House track in 2003, I did a double-take! Fortunately the Erick Morillo tracks that he worked with ended up sounding pretty good...
