The term "prog psy" is used to refer to a number of artist that not always sound very much like each other. I adore artist like Vibrasphere, Human Blue and Jaļa, they make rich and colorful music, albums i can listen to from start to finish and that take me somewhere. On the other hand i enjoy only the odd track by artists like Behind Blue Eyes, Perfect Stranger, Sun Control Spieces etc., they sound completely different, their albums bore the hell out of me. It's quite soulless music that sounds empty and harsh and is not really overwhelmingly dance-friendly either. Then there is a lot of quite decent stuff somewhere in between the boring and the great.
I don't really like to use the "prog psy" label, but i guess it could be applied to some extent to Sound Field's Audio Surfin, a completly flawless album in my book and without a doubt the best trance released this year.

Love Vibrasphere, haven't really listened to much else...what do you recommend? |
If you liked Vibrasphere's Archipelago you got to check Sun Control Species latest, it's called Scienza Nuova, tracks like "Here Comes The Titans" just blow me away !!
BTW, prog psy has lots (and I mean lots) of elements of classic progressive house and of classic psy trance, the prog house elements take away the classic trance type of energy, but if you liked old time Nick Warren and old time John Digweed you will find yourself at home with prog psy.

Human Blue - Electrolux
Vibrasphere - Archipelago
Sound Field - Audio Surfrin
It doesn't get more trance than that.

Progpsy does have many good artists. What people need to realise is that psy/goa is more of a true form of trance than uplifting/epic, so while some tracks will contain some good melodies, a lot of the time it can be something subtle like a good acid line or a moody string that works in a track.
Some good crossover tracks for those newer to progpsy imo would be
Vibrasphere - Sweet September
Andromeda - The Dreamer
Vibrasphere - Reservoir (Antix Rmx)
Son Kite - gazing at the sun
Prisoners of the sun - Hello Kitty (Fitalic Remix)
Obviously there's tons of good ones though, and if you check out stuff as mentioned from Gaudium, Ace Ventura, Tegma, Liquid Soul, Jaia (inc even11 w/ silicon sound) Ticon, Antix, Flowjob, Freq etc you'll find a sound that is very good at bridging gaps, eg for proghouse (chris micali, james monro, greed & sonic cube, parrket, Earsugar, D-Nox & Beckers & many more or progress it into more melodic trance, eg beetseekers, miika kuisma (and in general a fair bit of the scandinavian artists)
