I think it is asking too much from police to have to sacrifice themselves in order to make it impossible for people to get hurt when they are being non compliant.

As far as tasers go you can argue that they cause more damage than a baton or gun. If I had a too chose between having my bones broken with a baton or being shot with a taser, the taser I believe is the better option.

Agrees.

I was about to mention something about the baton as well.

Let's not forget the taser is about as much about the safety of the officer as much as the safety of the individual it's being used on.
And as stated in the article, common sense and talk didn't do the trick.
So, in this world of wackos who's going to subdue a crazed man throwing chairs and pounding on windows again?
Yea. Taser wins hands down.

The outcome is unfortunate but there's no background in the article regarding the man's medical or drug background either which I'm going to guess played a large part in his demise.

Which is why you don't use them on non-violent students or protestors for tyring to ask a question, make a point, engage in discourse, or for simply voicing their dissent.

i know its a horrible concept for some people, but how about following the instructions of the officer(s) (as we are bound to do by law)

I'm not against coercion or even using lethal force when necessary, which implies it requires justification validated by a clear demonstration of no other practical alternative.

Well, a bit of a double standard there don't you think? If the leaders, politicians, and "authority" figures are clearly violating and breaking the laws they're supposed uphold and/or enforce, why should citizens be held to a different standard? Why are 'they' expempt from the same coersive action? Anyways, I was just pointing out a clear contradiction there (in a somewhat general way).

Apparently everyone seemed to miss the point here, it wasn't the guy or the article, but the fact that tasers aren't exactly harmless and easily have the potential to cause serious injury or death. And these are the same fucking weapons most of you seem to be completely apathetic about being used on non-violent citizens, to the point where many of not only seem confortable with it, but rationalize and even attempt to justify it.

So... judging from the responses, looks like nobody got it to begin with, which makes me question if any of you will even after this post...

no we won't because most of us have accepted that taser death is the exception not the rule.

most of us know that death at the the hands of "authority figures" in general, is the exception not the rule...and that includes most violent offenders as well.

most of us know that anyone could die at the hands of any non-lethal weapon if used improperly or on the wrong person.

after the Redsox won the 2004 World Series during the celebration a woman was accidentally shot in the eye with a rubber bullet and died.

how ironic and so exceptional, to die from a bullet designed explicitly not to kill.

You're still obsessing over that marginal exception considering of your countless unprovoked derogitory comments and direct personal attacks (on many occasions generously worded with profanity)? Wow.

When new recruits are given their first taser, I can guarantee that they're itching to use it to test it out, for whatever mild reason they come across. They may even exacerbate a situation because they know they can, as they've got these sorts of weapons.

I think the entire situation could be alleviated to a large degree by requiring that our officers have a college education.
