actually, a puppy's brain is fully developed by the age of 10 weeks and is capable of doing extraordinary things. by waiting till later in life to start training, you miss out on the imprinting stage of your puppies development. my mom's belgium malinois pup was able to track and do scent articles at 10 wks, and now at 5 months is doing tactical and bite work as well as obedience.

as a trainer, i can honestly say that any lack of understanding on the dogs part is directly a result of what the owner has allowed the dog to get away with, and their ability to train with good timing and technique.

Unless you are an experienced dog owner, and have a lot of time to dedicate to it, a doberman is probably not for you. They require extensive socialization and training, but if done properly, they are amazing pets.

Spitty, as for malamutes, they are definatly not a good dog for someone who is gone for long periods of time, they are a working breed, they require A LOT of exercise, they can also get destructive when they are left alone and bored. So, unless you have a big house to keep them entertained, it's not a good idea.

Your best bet is to talk to breeders, be honest with them about your living and work situation, and they will point you in the right direction if their breed is not right for you.

I guess I did spoil him more when he was younger. I just assumed he wasn't paying attention instead of assuming my expectations were not as high as they should have been.
