worst thing I ever saw was some 70 year old lady with a walker leaning on the door while everyone around her sat down. She had swollen ankles and she go off at my stop which had no elevator. People shoved her out of the way to rush off the train and not a single person even offered to help her up the stairs.

I was so pissed off...either way I carried up her walker and had her lean agaist me so she could make it up the stairs. That is absolutely ridiculous that I was the ONLY person willing to help her.

To his defense, Trump didn't even really look like a bum.

Yea I get up for old people and help them when they need it. Same goes for pregnant women and injured people. I mean hell, if the most fit and obviously strong person breaks their leg you still should get up for them if they are on crutches. For old people and pregnant women, well that should be an unspoken rule.

People are just inconsiderate and it's also a cultural thing. Back in Eastern Europe, alot more people seem to get up than in the more westernised countries.

They get off the train and take the escalator up so that they can rush to their desks and sit on their asses for ~8hours then they do the whole thing all over again at the end of the day.

People's laziness continues to amaze me and what makes it worse is seeing old people with canes and walkers looking for seats on the train while young able bodied people are lounging.

You sound like a non-native New Yorker =P .

The simple answer, I think, is that the above ^^^ is what happens when you've lived in New York for too long. I'm not guilty of pushing anyone out of the way to get a seat. Nothing wrong with standing, ESPECIALLY before OR after sitting around in an office all day.. but I definitely used to be much better about giving my seat up. Growing up I used to give up my seat for EVERYYYONEE. I suppose I was taught to be polite and whatnot. Now though, I usually don't have much mercy.

The way it works is... after a a good number of years living here you realize that there are MILLIONS of people who ride the train with you every day and you can't make them ALL happy every day. Moreover, no one is necessarily more or less valuable as a human being that they should get special treatment. Living in New York entails standing up on trains and busses every now and then. Surely old people are aware of this and have accepted these conditions, as we still see them riding the trains every day. Nowadays, unless I'm in a great great mood, I only usually get up for a really pregnant woman, a pregnant woman with kids, or an old person who doesn't look like they're fit to stand. Oh, also a woman with a newborn or child who is unable to walk.

I'm not sure it's really about laziness though. I think the mentality is "Why should I have to expend extra energy in order for YOU to preserve yours?" "Why should YOU have to expend extra energy on account of me conserving mine?? What makes me so special that you should go the extra mile??"

I really hate how this all sounds, just to let you know. I do recognize that it's a bit harsh, but I think high density populations, where people HAVE to look out for themselves because no one else will, are what produce the kind of behaviors you've been observing. Standing up on a crowded train is probably one more stressful thing that people want to cross off their list of stressful things that they have to deal with on a typical NYC day. It's a lot easier to be polite when the population is only 100 or 200,000.

lol... I've been here too long.

i can understand giving up seats for old/handicapped/pregnant people, but i always preferred to stand on the subways. i always had fun making a game out of trying to force myself to stay balanced without holding onto a pole or handle.

cause it's more stressful on an older person's body... they way i see it, for me to stand 10 minutes, or open a door for someone, might stress my joints and take a few SECONDS of my life in the end.... for an elderly person to exert the same energy, might stress their body a lot more and take, say, a few DAYS off their life...

kids these days are jackasses... no respect for no one... not even the elderly.

Fuck old people indeed. If they don't have a job to be at, or to be coming home from, then timing a ride home with the work rush hour is plain moronic. Their stupidity can be rewarded with having to stand as far as I'm concerned.

It's a dog eat dog world I'm afraid, and I will eat your fucking dog.

on my bi-weekly visits to Brighton Beach I see this type of shit all the time. especially when i take the train from Manhattan to BB and all these older ppl are on the train and the young hoodlums don't even budge, makes me wanna smack them around a bit and be like "WTF is wrong with you? she's like 80 and you 18!"

but whatever, ignorance is bliss i guess.
