Isn't TTC one of Miller's bargain chips holding out for the feds to save Toronto's financial crisis?

i am not entirely against unions. but someone has to have the guts to stand up to them on issues and the city is just entirely a pushover for that type of stuff.

FINALLY! this is the best news EVER!!

i've spent some time now pushing this idea on the mississauga.ca forum, to mississauga transit, and even the mayor herself... (hopefully she got my letter, :P)

sure, there will be TONS of political hurdles to overcome, but i think it's the best idea for regional transit... i don't know ANY efficient, big city transit system that's so fragmented as the GTA's... let's face it, the GTA is one big city, whether we like it or not.

i don't think we should privatize, as transit seems to be a natural monopoly.. i think the GTAA (go transit) might do a nice job of it, since they already have so much inter-regional services...

presto is a load of bullshit... just politcal whitewashing of a problem... unifying the fare system doesn't change the fact that we have to pay multiple fares in the first place, just to travel across some imaginary line between two "cities" in the GTA, or the hassle of looking up two/three/four different transit system maps to get around...

oh goodness i HOPE they take over mississauga transit as well!!! please! worst. transit. EVER!!!!

Sadly unions nowadays are not the unions of early 20s-30s when labour unions were actually needed.

When workers stop caring about the quality of their work and care only for higher paycheck, well, the society suffers

Curious. What is the exact financial situation for the non TTC GTA transit systems?

We need to take a serious look at Ottawa Transit, THAT is how it's supposed to work.

Aside from multiple fares, schedules, etc, the real problem is inefficient service. The TTC (Take The Car) is in no way reliable. Why doesn't the subway open until 9am on Sundays when all these people are going to church, market, etc? Why are we investing millions of dollars on light rail in the core when it's pretty obvious how obtuse streetcars are without dedicated rights-of-way? One fender-bender and the whole line crawls to a halt because they can't divert. Why do I wait 30 minutes during (supposed) frequent service periods, and then three show up at once? Poor management.

RJ's right, if I couldn't manage my office I would have that responsibility taken away and given to someone else.

The better way? It might be soon.

But then it could always get worse...

I say build monorails on pylons above the medians on the Gardiner, DVP, 401 and 427. If every pylon carried a solar panel to mitigate the current draw from the grid, and every train had panels built into the roofs to power on-board electronics we would have an almost zero-emmission system that will not run into track conflicts and frozen switches like the current diesel trains...for that matter, why is there a moratorium on offshore wind farms (like in Holland)on lake Ontario when we're already missing our Kyoto commitments?

So, I'm going to run in the next Mayor's race. My platform:

David Spencer, he can't do any worse.

The TTC is already the city's largest expense on their budget. They can't sustain the system as it is, so what makes them think by retaining it they will be?

What I find about the City in general is that they always think in black and white - it's either cut service or raise fares/fees. It doesn't seem that anyone's making any conscious effort to try and seek alternate sources of funding whether that be through public/private partnerships or achieving mixed used options to maximize the value of their land. Is anyone thinking outside the box?

Ultimately, I don't mind paying higher fares, as long as that translates into better service which doesn't seem to be happening right now.

Upload it.

I've actually talked to a few of the subway drivers, and most of them have mentioned that they get paid too much. They were almost laughing about it. The kicker was the one driver that said he was getting paid for 20hrs of work, when he had actually only worked 5hrs on Canada day. You can't just pay these people x4 the actual wage!

Another big problem is workers just standing around not doing anything. I saw two guys painting a bench, with one brush. I first wrote it off, then I saw the same thing 3 more times, at 2 different stations.

Management needs to keep an eye on their workers.
