Best way to make sure the levels will be matched is by cueing up the track the same way you'll have it when it's finaly playing live.

best advice i can give is to learn how to mix and eq with the headphones off through the monitors, after awhile your levels (and correction abilily) will become so easy, you will learn how to distinguish frequency clashes, and which side is drifing where.

on of the best ways to get some good volume practice and fading done is match two tracks really well and practicing mixing back and forth on them multiple times without the use of headphones. experiment with the fades and eqs...really find out what your mixer is capable of.

remember, not all tracks can be mixed using the same technique. pay attention to your settings on the mixer but more than anything use your ears.
