well, when four of the top 10 most violent countries are in south america (venezuela, colombia, brazil, & ecuador), some people may have reservations about going there. i don't necessarily agree, i can't wait to go to south america. it's definitely on the top of my to do list.

Well, for one, Johan Gielen cancelled his S. America tour due to "political reasons", not to mention a few newsletters/emails from other artists, etc... Generally I think the situation down there in most of those countries is not too good, based on my own friends and family in Ecuador, Argentina, and few people we know with friends and family in the other S. American countries.... Probably generalizing but the way events are put together there are in totally different ways than the way ours are, for better or worse, and the drug problem is so much worse, especially in these club events, compared to even our parties, so big DJs must be getting more and more cautious... Sucks because I see a lot of huge music coming out of S. America in Argentina and Brazil lately...

What happened in this video is horrible, tragic, disgusting... but let's not get carried away here.

I play in South America all the time and I have never encountered anything even close to shady. The people for the most part are extremely close / very nice to one another and are very family oriented.

As far as the club scene goes, South America is without a doubt one of the best places to play in the world as well as one of the best places to go clubbing. The people are extremely educated when it comes to EDM, they appreciate the music and the culture, and the vibe in the clubs is unreal.

This shooting took place at a public event in Venezuela but it could have happened in any club in the world. In fact, several shootings have happened in NYC clubs (not at edm events but at edm venues).

And let's not forget, PVD's New Years Event a few years ago at Ikon here in NYC was almost just as bad as this video.

Well, yes and no.... Not to disagree with you 100%, but I do have to somewhat... Yes, clubs you've played at, like Pacha Buenos Aires for example, or the Crobar down there as well, are a whole other story probably... But where my family is from, not to mention what I hear from my friends in Brazil, Colombia, etc., it's not the EDM scene in the clubs that's the problem.. It's these big parties... A huge problem down there is that drug lords (and what not) organize these huge events, with huge DJs, lasers, etc.... It's very different from the organization a Pacha or Crobar or some superclub down there has, but it's very much a huge part of their EDM scene. Like, in Ecuador at least (once again), and also according to my friends in Puerto Rico and those areas, you won't see a Kleinenberg or Carl Cox or Steve Lawler playing at a random club on a Friday night... When they do come, it's in an arena, and there's 10-20,000 people there, and there's trouble just waiting to happen with crowds that big... Of course, every country's socio-political situation is different, but from what I hear and see, the average EDM lover isn't going to the big superclubs, which are seen as elitist, and where, yes, a lot of beautiful people and other EDM fans go... The scene has a totally different meaning down there, which is why you may have noticed that the emergence of minimal came about almost simultaneously from South America as it did in Germany (a lot of huge DJs and so many productions coming out of that continent)... These underground, drug-sponsored events, as bad and stereotypical as that sounds, are what helped bring up a big techno scene, but also now and then hurt it.... One time, when I was in Ecuador, and wanted to go see Mauro Picotto play a Meganite party there, my cousins explained this all to me... They thought I was crazy, because a) it was dangerous enough to go out after 8pm, but b) it was a huge warehouse party thrown by the local promo-group notorious for these huge drug fests... Sure enough, I didn't go, but saw pictures later, and wouldn't you guess, it was literally an airplane-hangar-size warehouse with what looked like 10,000 people going nuts... Same thing I hear happens in Brazil... You have warehouses and beaches and mountaintops full of thousands of poorer and middle class kids going crazy to techno tripping out of their skull, but also big superclubs with a totally differnt clientele but into the same music, only kilometers away... Just my two cents, I could be wrong about the whole of South America, but this is just based on what I know from my own experience and family in those areas mentioned

And just as an example for those of you who know nothing about South America.... You could go to a club in the middle of the old section of the city and be listening to the newest Cocoon Records release in a beautiful club with a sick sound system, and beautiful women everywhere (where everyone is more white, and Spaniard-descended)... and then halfway across town, you could go to a warehouse and hear the same Cocoon Records release with 5,000 people, who are a bit poorer, darker, more into drugs.... It's these big festivals with huge DJs that mixes these two very different groups (who are into the same music), and that's when trouble happens... Just an example to help illustrate in case my other paragraph was too general haha....

Forum Fight!!

You make some good points Marcelo and you're right for the most part.

But it's the same way in NYC or anywhere else in the world for that matter. The shooting at Crobar, the continuous stabbings at the PVD New Years Eve event at Ikon a few years ago; these are just a couple examples.

And these crimes aren't exclusive to music events. Presidents have been assassinated, people have been shot in movie theaters / malls / etc...

Will be interested to find out what caused it all.
I just met a Venezuelan and they were telling me how cool the scene is down there (esp for techno heads). Heard the same from everyone else who's been to S America. So it's pretty enticing for me to make the trip. Stuff like this always worries me though.

4 Dead , 9 injured

"Four people have been shot dead and nine wounded at a Carl Cox gig in Caracas, as graphic aftermath footage surfaced on the web earlier today.

While no official statement has been released, reports from a dance-music community's forum have revealed details of the tragedy and allege Carl Cox had barely begun his set when sounds similar to 'firecrackers' went off at the party.

One forum user described the scene in front of him as 'crazy', with people running for their lives.

Known as 'vjrei', the user had the camera running while the event was taking place, saying, "I was in the main [room], doing my visuals and filming the show."

After hearing the commotion, the VJ 'grabbed the camera and started to film everything [that] was going on'.

Onlookers saw the gunman 'keep shooting...then realised [sic] what he did and ran'."

This is what the dude that saw the shooting and recorded had to say :

I was doing my last concert by requiest of one of the promoters last night. I was retairing because I was seek of so many idiots driving production companies, people without education. The owners of the productions companies start tu cut corners and hire people without experience.

Last nigh, 15 meter from me when Carl Cox started his show and 10 minutes into it some one started to shot every one. I sounded like firecrackers, so fast I didn't think was a gun. Everybody started to run like crazy.

I was in the main, doing my visuals and filming the show. I just grabbed the camera and started to film everything what was going on.

3 dead body's on the floor, a young guy, a woman and a man. The husband of the woman was shot as well in the leg. Several others people as well but they managed to run.

Mute, my VJ was infront of the shooter, his girlfriend saw the guy with the gun and gave a warning. Mute, saw the guy starting to shoot, stoped and keep shooting and then the shooter realized what he just did and ran.

The party was going so well.

I knew the sponsor, I knew the promoters. The sponsor was Marlboro and was a good guy. The promoters too but no one of security was checking for weapons or anything.

I may upload the video later on, I am not in the mood to even grab my video camera and take a look at the images.

Dam thats some fucked up shit I cant even think of something like that happening espically in a crowded place , your dance and you get shot even if some one is going to kill some one else you can get shot just for standing there

They said nobody was checked for weapons thats fucked up ! After seeing this I dont mind getting checked by a bouncer because I know every one else coming in will get checked too . Unless its some vip mother ****** with the gun

Jason I have no idea how you can compare this to anything that happened in NYC's EDM scene. That night at Icon was nothing more than a bunch of punk ass wanna-bees pulling out pocket knives and keys from what I remember......nobody was seriously hurt and that shooting at Crobar was a woman who was carrying a gun and accidentally shot herself in the leg. I'm sure there were other cases worst than these but as long as I have known there has never been multiple people killed in cold blood in an NYC club. I'm not saying it couldn't happen but there is no reason to compare......this is just horrible.

some of my friends were at ARIA in montreal about 2 years ago ( i forget which show it was) and there was a gang-related killing in the club during the set.

They caught the guys that did it but they had to make everyone stay in the club until 3 pm the next day.

This kind of news is awful and those videos are bone chilling, it is a sad day for the clubbing community.
