At least it's easy to avoid now we know it exists (e.g. upgrade). I have a policy of never giving Internet access to anything that doesn't need it. WinAmp comes into that category. I hate all these sneaky apps connecting you to the net all the damn time, which is why I wouldn't be without a firewall.

Also, "infected" mp3s can easily be "cured", it seems.

I'd like to know how the trojan managed to delete all those files, sounds a bit dubious to me. That ActiveX stuff can be a bitch though. A lot of this grief is caused by smartass developers trying to be too bloody clever. Trying to get apps to do all these smart stuff without considering the consequences. Microsoft are the kings of that.

AAgggh......why do people make viruses?

1. don't use the minibrowser it seems

2. nortons cannot figure this one out, since it is a bug inherent in the software. Nortons would have to check the id3 tag of every mp3 that gets played in winamp.. would make much more sense for nullsoft to fix it.

3. yeah get the lastes winamp...

My advice is to just be in the lookout. That new winamp is giving me some bugs, but still my best player that I have and I still continue to use it. It is possible the music industry is giving us a scare, but I don't worry too much about that.

I've been Hit!!!

It seems to be I'm the only one who's been hit with that fucked virus here. I've cursed that MFs to the death.
Anywayz what it does? Actually it doesn't delete any mp3s it just accesses windows options menu and tags all the files with *.*.mp3 extension as hidden files and clones all mp3s as *.*.vbs (Virtual basic script even the winamp icon chages to the vbs icon but song names stays intact) As soon as you click on one of them it tries to open your "Outlook Express" tries to e-mail someone or someplace!!!
Its easy to get rid of it and recover your missing mp3 files. First delete the all files with vbs extension otherwise same thing happens again as soon as you click one of them by accident! Then go to the FOLDER where you have kept your mp3s and click on VIEW button then goto FOLDER OPTIONS to bring the settings menu and select the SHOW ALL FILES option. TaTaaaa you have regained all of them back
TO UNHIDE THEM: Highlight all hidden files( They appear in faded color) right click then click on Properties from the menu select Archive or Read Only. You're DONE..........
