haha. im retarded; i use firefox with text size enlarged, and the wrong values were coming up for components. some ram gets quite expensive when it gets older and goes out of production, i thought this might be a case of that. but no, im retarded.

I wouldn't listen to Cloudburst regarding the need for 2 memory sticks. Running the memory in dual channel probably woun't result in a performance boost you'll be able to detect. However there could be stability problems if you don't used matched pairs.
Your best best would be to buy a single 1GB stick of generic DDR RAM and put that in the slot where your 256 stick is currently located, then move that stick to the first free DIMM slot on your motherboard. You might find that PC3200 is easier to get hold of than PC2700 and this should work fine, you can always run memory slower than it's rated speed.
Also, the reason you currently have 224MB RAM displayed is because your graphics adaptor (probably build into the motherboard) is taking 32MB for itself.

as mentioned installing in pairs is not true. and the whole thing about matched pairs has no effect either. its only good when overclocking for stability issues related to quality control and having similar matched performing pairs.
cloud: this isn't old ass simm memory (might as well lump rambus in there too. rambus is basically a simm on sterroids anyways) so no need for pairs. read up. also dual channel is the only way it should be installed in pairs but only if your going to take advantage of it. something he can't do as his chipset iirc is too old.

Yep, having used that mobo in 2 builds, it does have onboard shared graphics.
DDR RAM is expensive now that it's old tech, 2GB will set you back £60ish.
