Drop out of school, get a job, figure out what you want to go to school for. College right out of high school in order to go into your 'career field' is for people who have their destiny all neat and laid out for them [typically by the people who are actually paying for their education, too]. Just don't stop reading and learning.

/pleb advice

I realized this two years into college. I changed my mind twice on what I wanted to major in, and for each one I realized it's something I'd rather do as a hobby in my spare time. Once I had no direction in school I started to slack off, and my grades suffered. That was only one quarter, but I knew damn well that it was going to continue that way until I knew what I wanted to do (which I more than likely wont know for a few years). As a result I've left school for the time being, and will return once I know what it is I want to do. No way am I going to fork out the cash for tuition when I know I'm not going to focus.

Good move

I started Uni straight out of high school REALLY unsure about what i wanted to be doing, and got shit grades as a result of not being really interested in what I was doing.

Ended up ditching it, and went traveling for almost 3 years, which was the best thing I could have done for myself. When I got back, I started up a new degree, this time in something I was interested in. Waaaaaaay better.

It's something to consider. I'm in my third year and I'd feel like a dumbass if I drop out now and take it back up in a couple years, especially considering how many classes need to be retaken. I'm gonna be in college for a decade.

... Not literally I hope.

What are you studying? And do you actually like it? Because if you don't, you're going to be spending a lot longer hating your life, especially if you're studying something quite specialised that won't carry over into other career areas, should you ever want to change job direction.

See thats the thing. I have no idea what I want but I've been here so long. I've pretty much felt like there is no other option but school so I have to dabble until I find something that fits. I don't know if I'd be able to just work and not go to school, even though this is a blatant waste of money. Technically I'm a film major but I haven't taken a film class since first semester freshman year. I was on a psychology binge for a bit, then philosophy, the urban planning, then premed. If it was up to me I'd do architecture but the architecture school here is FAR too choosy. My buddy got 3.5ish and didn't get in after two years of lower classman bitch work, spending over-nights in studio to finish projects. He a very focused dude and couldn't get in. It's a fucking joke...

It's a LOT of money to spend just trying to figure things out, when you could be doing any number of other things, and be figuring it all out in the process.

I'm certainly not suggesting you quit college though. Unless you know you can just head back and start things up again when you want to.

I had that option (over here, it's called "deferring" your degree). That made things really easy for me. I'm not sure if you would have that option though, should you decide to bail?

Have you spoken to an academic adviser about it all? Might be worth a shot. I got surprisingly good advise when I went and spoke to one. Your campus would have a number of them available, I'm sure, and I would think for free?

Don't know if I'm helping much

Stuff to think about though.

Yeah I could probably talk to my adviser. I'm kinda stuck right now though because if I don't maintain my grades I'm out anyway. The thing that worries me most about the thought of leaving school is the rents getting angry.

I know exactly how you feel man.

I was pre med for my first two years of college. I hated it, and I mean pure hatred for it. At the end of my second year I decided to change my major.

At the beginning of my third year I started my path to a degree in Physics. The only thing I regret was not doing physics from the start, but dwelling on hindsight isn't worth it. I absolutely loved physics. (Only thing seperating me from my degree now is two German courses.)

Taking time off, even in your latter years of college, is nothing to be ashamed of. The main thing to look out for is core curriculum at your university. I've taken all of my core curriculum and I'm currently taking time off to be with my family during mourning of the death of my dad. They say I have two years without enrollment to their school to finish my requirements to graduate WITHOUT having to RE-take those core classes. Just watch out for stupid things like that.

Okay... 'nuf outta me.

Leaving school is fine if you've got-
Talent
Direction
Motivation
Ambition
Even just one of those will see you through the worst of it, but if you're at school still just figuring out those then I strongly suggest you stay there and find a field you can work in that is interesting. Wandering out into the big wide world without any of the above 4 and you're going to have a very bad time of it.

The other problem is that you don't seem to have any pressure to form any of those four areas, a bit of duress might bring you back down to earth and make you wake up to the fact that if you don't do anything, it's not going to land in your lap as a free meal.
