That would work against you, imo.

While the headphones are key to beatmatching and even getting a feel for what EQ'ing needs to be done, and how much fading etc... You have to be able to hear as much of the environment as possible, and make use of all the tools at your disposal.

IE: Headphones/Monitors/The Actual System.

At least that's what I think, don't exactly have much experience, but ya.

well at home since i don't like to blast the volume I usually go headphone only. When I'm fortunate enough to get the chance to play out, usually I will try it headphone only, but turn the volume down low enough so that I can still hear the monitors.

i guess it just depends on how i'm feeling for each song. sometimes i mix it up. If I'm ever caught in the midst of a trainwreck I will usually put the phones on both ears and crank the phones volume way up until I'm back on track

with cds i beatmatch using only the headphones.

with vinyl i beatmatch using the cup method just to get a feel of the beats.then i clean up the beat in the headphones. so i really dont use the monitor method.

personally i prefer the headphone only method.i tried both ways and just found myself gravitating towards the headphone only method.

but it depends on which headphones your using to do it with ive found out.sony 7509 and certain other sony headphones are junk when it comes to headphone only mixing.they cant take the level boost and eventually become distorted and useless for djing with.i went through 3 pairs of sonys before i relized i needed to upgrade.now i use a pair from technics.great pair of headphones. no complaints at all and ive used them at clubs with large systems and they sound great beatmatching using just the headphones.its all in what pair you got!!

He's not talking about regular insulated cans that work like earmuffs, he is talking about actual "noise cancellers" as made by companies like Bose.

They monitor the incoming sounds from outside and generate a reverse tone which negates a large portion of the offending noise. They work best for repetitive noises such as the hum of an aircraft engine etc. Therefore they may or may not be good for DJing. Perhaps they would do a good job getting rid of the kick drum, but not so much the melodies?

Never even tried a pair of noise cancelling headphones, but I suspect it's all a big load of shit really.

Attitude Problem

You've got a serious attitude problem, i've been posting on these forums since the day they went on-line. Who are you to tell me that i can't post on a forum? Get over yourself. Maybe you should post on a few more forums to get a few extra MySpace views/plays while you're at it. DJ Delusional, how appropriate.

i learned both.

headphones for the bedroom DJ (respecting the neighbors late at night).

headphones also come in usefull if monitors are shit (blake touched on this) or lagging or badly placed, otherwise i'd rather use the monitor.

i just use headphones to beat-match/cue up, once both tracks are going and i'm in the mix - i'll take my headphones off and go off what's coming out of the monitor/system.

Me.

I never trust the monitors in any venues.

Plus most of my bedroom DJing was having to keep it headphones...because someone in the house was always sleeping and had to get up early in the morning, blah blah blah.

I don't find decent monitors in most venues I've played.
