It's not really that hard to understand what this show is about. All he is doing is showing how to get through specific situations in the wild. Whether he has a camera crew with him or not is irrelivant. If that bothers you then you aren't watching the show for its real purpose.

I think the problem is that when the show first started, everyone was under the impression that like "Survivorman," he was out in the wild, fending for himself, without any outside help. If he said from the start that he was just showing survival tips, but that he himself wasn't actually putting himself in any danger, things would be different. However, if you're making people think you're out there facing the forces of nature, but are using a life jacket to go down a raging river or spending the night in hotels, it's going to piss people off.

I still think some of the things he does are crazy/cool/interesting, but it's much harder, in my opinion, to do what "Survivorman" does. Sure he's not drinking water from elephant crap, but he is out there, on his own, for a week at a time. Don't get me wrong, he can and has called in backup when things get really really bad, but for the most part it's just one guy, by himself, living in the wild. And that is much cooler than watching Baer eat weird stuff. Fear Factor was fine for that.

see, but he does put himself into dangerous situations. All of his stunts are real. He does climb some wicked cliffs with no ropes, just to give you one example.

Aided or not, Bear Grylls is one of the most hardc0re bastards on the planet.

we were talking about Man vs Wild at dinner during my office holiday party last night, and i explained that what i've learned from Bear Grylls is that if you're ever stranded in the wild, the only way to get out of it is to strip off all your clothes.

i love it, and will most likely end up buying the DVD set for season 1 eventually.

Well, he presents each episode as a story. He gets dropped off in some remote location, usually by some bizarre way. Then at the end he always displays his "relief" of finding rescue or civilization. If it was just him showing survival techniques, that's one thing, but he presents it in a format as if he is actually "out there" having to use those techniques to survive.

I'd hope that he wouldn't put himself into dangerous situations, I agree. But when he gives advice, such as how to float down a river using a backpack as a floatation device, but then uses a life jacket himself (without letting the audience know), I think it's a bit shady.

There is a good video recap below. If he wants to purely make a survival show, fine...then bill it as that. But when he tells you that he's doing one thing to "survive," but it's either staged or fake, then I think it's shady. If he tells you that he's stranded and actually using these techniques to survive, but is not stranded at all, I also think it's phony.

Man vs. Wild is da bomb. I really don't believe that "Survivor Man" is filming all that stuff himself. For example, there was an episode where there was shot of him on the other side of the river, putting out his campfire and preparing to get moving. You're telling me that he swam across the river, set up the shot, swam back across the river, put out his fire and such, then swam back across the river to get the camera again? Bullshit.

I don't see why people are so caught up on the fact that he's got a camera crew and that he gets help in certain situations as if he's a fake or something.

He clearly isn't but it's a show and he has to make it entertaining and educational. I have no doubt in my mind that if he was out in the wilds by himself, he wouldn't have any trouble surviving.

I've actually learned a lot from just watching the show and it's amazingly entertaining. He also risks his life in many situations, especially when he's free climbing. Next thing you know someone will say it's all in a studio and there's a trampoline underneath him and he's got invisible wires strapped to him

I just watched the first 3 eps of the season plus the Everest special, and am about to watch ep 4. Bloody brilliant show!
