well basically there two international governing agencies that set widely used standards in aviation, they are ICAO ( International Civil Aviation Organazation) and IATA ( International Air Transport Agency) so basically under icao standard the first letter of the identifiers symoblizes the country the airport is located in, so for american its K, for England its E, for Russia its U, China its V, and so on. Under IATA they only go with 3 letters.
