Average is definetly 40 hours a week but I can push 50 hours at the end of the month to crank out sales and meet targets.

at some company in Japan, a worker cannot open the doors of the office when he reached a certain amount of overtime.

Pshhh 100 hours of overtime a MONTH! that's about 23 hrs of overtime a week. Which means about 63 hours of work per week.

That's friggin standard here in North America, at most medium-sized consulting companies. It sure is a standard where I work. 50+ hours is given as a reference point during an interview, and quite often it's more.

As an example, the most recent project I worked on:
* 2-3 months prior to go-live, the team on averaged worked about 60 hours a week, every week.
* during go-live, and post go-live (for about 1-2 months) team worked at about 80 hours a week (for regular team members)
* peaking during that time, for myself, and 2 other guys, at 96, 97, and 103! hours a week (for 2 weeks in a row)

No work-life balance to speak of. That can't be good for health, social, life in general.

Yep. That's crazy. I work 37.5 in a week and think we as a country should even cut that back. I work to live, I will NEVER live to work even when I have a family I will try super hard to not be like that.

I easily work up to 50 hours a week...that means doing emails and reports from home ...I also have a part time job on Saturdays but I am not ready to quit yet bc I wouldnt know what the hell to do hahaha so used to it been working there for 7 years now!!

I don't mind working extra from home sometimes but if its a continuous thing it gets irritating bc then i have no time to myself, family or friends

I'm similar.

I work on average 37.5 hours a week. If I need to come in on the weekend, its by choice only. I could EVERY weekend if I wanted to. lol.

Last 4 weeks I've been average 45-50 hours, bc of a particular file I've been working on that had deadlines that needed to be met.

During "tax time" (usually beg of Feb to end of Apr) standard work week is 40-45, which many of us working more depending on the amount of mess that needs to be done... its a CRAZY time of the year at an accounting firm. High stress, must work Saturday (at least make an appearance for appearances sake... (damn office politics))
