If you have a good cpu/gpu you can leave it on. It really looks great compared to xp. Once 947 osc synths pop up I can still switch to the basic skin for performance reasons. Turning off the UAC is a must!

I will try to leave Aero on and see what my CPU usage is. I have a Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz. I could probably leave it on.

Like I said, it especially eats RAM. Monitor your ram load in the task manager while activating / deactivating aero and you'll see what I mean.
