Inorite? I'm like this with techno and house. Whenever I try to make them, it just comes out sounding like boring trance.

Making dance music imo involves a lot of trial and error imo.

Once you know how the basic wave forms sound, how your filters work, etc, you gotta put 'em in place.

Well as for basics for house music, it involves a 4x4 kick, claps, hats, low bass, mid bass, lead, rhythm, lead, well, tbh, I don't know what to tell you, you have to listen to the songs yourself because there are exceptions to every "rule", and I wouldn't say they are rules but guidelines.

That's why TA, and I, couldn't give you a straight up answer after 2 pages. It's hard to describe sounds. We might seem like assholes who won't tell you the answer, but in reality it's hard to describe.

House and Trance although they are both 4/4 based are so different it's unreal.

In house music you can get away with less but that's not to suggest that making good house music is easy.

Trance will have a payload so to speak, it has a purpose and will build and try to take you to a climax. House music doesn't need this although you get people who break the trend which is always healthy.

House music is groove based, it relies on having good bassline driven loop which is enhanced by the additional percussion that will essentially dictate the percieved tempo/energy level in the track.
Just because house music can be more minimal than trance it doesn't mean that you will get away with poor arrangement.

Although doing a mixdown for a house track is potentially easier, House music needs to make sure that everything really gels together and sounds cohesive.
Compression is one of the fundamental elements in all dance music so it's a must that you know good compression techniques or it will be tough to get that tight groove sound that is so typical for house.

I know what some of the guys mean by describing it as sex in the sense that house music is very smooth and needs to have a sleak finish to it for it to sound convincing.

House has to have an element of funk even if it's not Funky house so it's probably worth checking out some Bootsy Collins or P-Funk as this should serve as a good inspiration for basslines and other groove related matters.

Just my two cents, not sure if I answered your question but it will give you a few things to think about. Feel free to ask if you want some deeper explanations.

Cheers
Nem

There once was a man named JACK, and JACK had a groove, and from this groove came the grooves of all grooves, and while one day visciousely throwing down upon his box, JACK boldly declared; LET THERE BE HOUSE! and house music was born...
