When you have a song playing are the LED indicators of the master and channels at similar levels? If not you should adjust your master level so that it is.

ok I understand what you guys are saying.

however, I can't even get the 3 bars (left, middle, right) to be even the same level.. usually its just left and right are the same levels depending on if im mixing two songs or not.

I tried playing around with my gains and the master level knob and I wasn't even remotely able to get anything close to that guys avatar picture.

both my gains are at about 10 o'clock.. my master is at about 10 o'clock .. and my hi is at about 10 o'clock (usually stays here) and my mid is usually at around 2o'clock when the song is playing and lo is at around the same when its playing.

total side note as well: if the levels are red is that bad? I have a DJ buddy and he told me that red is bad and I saw him dj'ing at a party on the weekend WITH my mixer and he was red lining the fuck out of it.. I was like wtf?

Red lining is definitely bad for the mixer. You'll start to hear distortion. On club systems, however, it's usually so loud andway and the clubs have their own limiters that dj's routinely redline. If it was on my mixer I'd be pissed though.
