Storing to/streaming from harddrive is also possible, but way slower than storing in memory. The good thing is you get more free memory available if you do that.

Dont get him a macbook. As others have noted, a desktop (if an option) is the way to go. If not, toshiba makes a nice line of affordable and serviceable notebooks. Im running one right now dual booting XP and Ubuntu. Buy a cheap one and throw some RAM in there yourself. I now have a macbook quality machine at half the price.
