I moved out when I was 17, when I moved to Brisbane to go to Uni.

It's a bit easier for us here though, if you're going to school, as we get a thing called "Aus-Study" which is essentially like the dole, but for students. You can still work a part time job etc. too, so it was pretty cool.

In your situation though, $300 a month left over for food/beer/whatever isn't much! Though your costs of living might be cheaper over there I guess. The main point is that you won't be able to save much money. If you're renting an apartment and you lose your job for some reason, you're kinda fucked, you know?

On the other hand, 1.5 hours drive just to see your gf is pretty crap too.

Not an easy choice.

im 18 right now, doing a vic lap when i should be in 1st year, i fucking hate staying at home sometimes but it'd be too much to live on my own i think.

my uncle lived in my basement (where i am now too) for quite awhile (mid 20s) and then he got married and they moved and got a house and seem to be doing okay for themselves. so id say there's no rush, you still got some time and do it when you feel its necessary.

how does your girlfriend feel about it?
what do you do for a living?

p.s. im gay too and id probabaly move out to look at the stars and shit, plus id be baller ass fuck to have your own pad, fuck this thread gives me inspiration.

I wouldn't move out unless you need to, or your finances permits it very easily. There's a big difference between living at home when you're in your 30s, and trying to save some $$$ to get a head start in life.

After I leave my job in March, I'll be selling my house and moving into my mother's house until August, though I will be the only occupant (she will be working in Africa) so it's a bit of a different situation. I'll be 25. Even if she were going to be there, though, I would still do it. I don't really see any reason not to, as we would be splitting the cost of living which is a great financial decision for both of us.

Then again, I have always enjoyed privacy and plenty of personal space when living with my parents. Your mileage may vary.

I think any potential child of mine isn't out of the house by 19 I'm kicking them out, even if I have to give them one of mine to piss off. By 19 years of proximity alone I'll have annoyed them to the point of extreme irritation and by 20, it'll be to the point of homicide.

As sushi said, $300 is not much excess.

You forget about expenses such as home and contents insurance, repair bills around the home, doctor's appointments, speeding fines, birthday presents for others, medication, big nights out etc...

Make sure you're really financially secure before you move out.

Living at home is great though, I'd stay for at least another two years if I was you.

This is what I'm doing atm. I'm 26 and still at home although I have my own attic which is of such a size that it's almost an apartment. The main cause of it are the absurd and ridiculous prices for housing in the greater Amsterdam region here. It's better to save up some cash and build a buffer so I can live more easily when I leave the house

Get into the habit of paying rent, even if you're at home contribute weekly payments to your folks. Why? Because it builds discipline, and you will learn real quick that you need to be careful with your spending choices and impulse purchasing.

Sure you could save up and by your own place in a couple of years, or you could get a mortgage, buy a place with two bedrooms and rent the spare out to recoup some costs. A little creativity can go a long way

My take on it - rent where you want to live, buy where you want to rent out (i.e. investment property).

I lived on my own for a year, then i moved to the dorms for 2 years. When my parents moved back to Atlanta i decided to cut them a break (because they were paying for my rent) and move in with them. All around a nice move but i am getting kind of tired of it. Thankfully i am done with school in December and i will be out (who knows where but out).

I was sick for a long time which im slowly recovering from & never got to do college education, which I plan to start once i've got some cash together. I need said qualifications to get a job that isn't minimum wage.

I put the money my dad gave me after he split with my mum & we sold our old house into this one with my mum, my brother put a bit in too. It's a future investment for now. I pay towards everything that is used and am learning to live & function on nearly no money.

Houses here are ridiculously priced. New buyers are totally priced out, largely due to the level the prices have risen and buy to let people buying up all of the affordable housing themselves. To buy a house now you pretty much need to be on big money or married with 2 wages to afford payments.

It is fairly comfortable for my current needs. My mam is only in 4 nights a week and I have my own tv with satellite telly, so most of my time is spent with my brother, who is tolerable (except when he tells me people on my msn list signed out to get extra time online himself!)

Until finances allow, i'd be silly to move out, there's almost nothing to help people out there & we have good neighbours around here. My only option on my current finance would be shared accomodation and that'd be hard to deal with, cos i like my quiet, plus have the dog & most rentals don't allow pets.
