Honestly I would go to a guitar center or sam ash with a CD of tracks you know very well. Listen to a few, ignore the brand names, and get ones that you enjoy. Hearing taste is very personal, so it's important to get a pair you really like. Just make sure they isolate outside sounds well too, or else it's gonna suuuuuck to mix with them.

Frank: My last sony's have ZERO cabability to block out - so that's probably my most important sought after feature. Lucky for me, Guitar center and Sam Ash are 2 stores down from one another and 10 min from my office But I'll take some cd's in with me.

Nice! I really love my Ultrasones, and Guitar Center carries them. I have the HFI-550's, which they gave me for a pretty good price. I'd test them:

1) With no sound playing to see how they block out sound
2) CD playing at low levels to check the basic soudn quality
3) ALMOST as loud as you would use them (all headphones need some break-in time before they really soudn great, but gotta make sure they can handle it)

I'd say look for the most clear heaphones as opposed to loudest or bassiest. Bassy/sloppy headphones can make mixing a lot harder than it needs to be.

techs.

NEVER buy sony.ive been through three pairs, they lose thier bass quality fast and then thats all folks.plus they dont hold up well for noise in a club.technics are the way to go.excellent quality. ive had mine for a year now with no reduction in quality and theyve already outlived all my sonys.

Those are the ones that dont swivel at all, correct? I think those are supposed to have much better SQ than the V700's.

FYI, there are two Technics headphones models...

we have the RP-DJ1200a...

these

I have tried the new model Technics and they are a little too bulky for me, but I know a lot of people that use them and say they are great.

I agree with the size issue on the sony's. Every pair I have tried on have been too big to bother even looking into further.

if you're looking for good bass, a pair of Jensen JNC50/51 noise cancelling phones could be the way to go. I've sampled sennheiser and numerous other phones, none come close to the jensen phones, sony mdr's or anything else. they're inexpensive and I've found them to be the best sounding after sampling many phones. I haven't listened to the Technics though..

Yes and they sound absolutely awesome

They're the black ones that you can see PVD use and Sasha used to use them before getting the xones.. i think lee burridge also uses them.. but that doesnt matter its all personal pref.

I didnt like the Techs because they were too crazy on the lows when i tried them on for me
