That's the whole point. It's a reality movie based on normal people who happen to see something majorly messed up happen and have no idea what is going on or what to do. What you or I would do in the same situation.

As someone from the Something Awful forum put it best:

quote:
Huh, really? Because last time I checked, it wasn't called "The Sea Spider from Space" and didn't star Ben Affleck and wasn't directed by Michael Bay.

It's called "Cloverfield" -- as in the neighbourhood the characters were from - it was a bunch of friends and neighbours who had to deal with their entire way of life being fucked to death by an unknown creature. That was part of the terror - it being unknown.

The monster wasn't a character. It was a plot device.

How were those characters supposed to explain a monster they didn't know themselves? They certainly guessed - "Maybe WE made it" -- but honestly, how could they have known? Could they have conveniently come across a bleeding marine biologist trapped under a bus that whispered: "you can... *cough* ...kill it....*cough cough*...whipped cream...its one weakness....*hack cough*...curse you, human arrogance!....*coughhackDIES*" ?

No way.

Most of the extra info you have to decode with everyone else through the Cloverfield ARG.

When it started up until the movie premiered, we have most of the backstory. The connection between the backstory and the movie isn't 100% clear yet, as well as what happens after of course (aside from the sound clip after the credits).

they way it was filmed was effective (especially the scene where the bridge was falling down) after about halfway through the movie when the whole shaky camera point of view got tedious and boring. the plot could've been expanded and developed better, and considering its runtime of about 80 mins it looks like they took the easy way out.

maybe i'm being overly critical but i've seen a lot of movies lately and this was definitely NOT one of the better ones.

if you want to see a well make and well acted movie go see "no country for old men"

Did you even read my post? Or watch the beginning? It was just playing a videotape found at the site of the incident. Much like Blair Witch.

i didn't like blair witch. i read your post and i know that it's supposed to be a movie about ordinary ppl filming a catastrophic event. however what i said though, is that the plot leaves a lot to be desired-i mean practically the whole movie they're running scared and the guy looks for his gf for 80 minutes. thats the whole movie. they started out with a good concept but they could've developed it a lot more. imo a movie is nothing without a decent plot no matter how its filmed.

Did I miss something here... this is the guy who created Lost style plot lines after all. He isn't know for liking to show his monsters or really leave the plot closed. You have to look at his body of work too when you consider this movie.

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm not expecting a lot out of ANY film these days because most are pure, unadulterated, weapons-grade CRAP! I haven't seen a great movie in forever, and went back to older films to see greatness or foreign films. I don't get how you can be critical of any film's plot these days... creativity is something severely lacking in Hollywood after all.

Take about 10 years ago... you had very very few series style movies... and had a bunch of films many people consider to be classics from the 90's, especially if you look at production crews like Disney. Today, I'm horrified to spend the over-priced amount to go see a film in a theater because I know the film isn't going to be that great. The last two films I was actually impressed by: The Matrix (the original film for all the questions it put in the public sphere) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl because Johnny Depp's excellent performance as Jack Sparrow. Otherwise... most films I've been ho-hum about (National Treasure is also a fine piece of cinematic lore imho).

The reason Cloverfield actually interests me... is that it is more psychologically thrilling than viscerally thrilling. It deals with the shit-storm a group has to go through to try and save one person... all the while attempting to evade a supreme danger (aka a monster and its offspring). It's not a new story by any means... but its the way JJ Abrams approaches it that interests me... and will be the reason I want to still see the film.

If you think I'm biased... congrats... I'm a former film student turned to Media Studies...

Again, you didn't read my post. I'll bold the important part:

Most of the extra info you have to decode with everyone else through the Cloverfield ARG.

When it started up until the movie premiered, we have most of the backstory. The connection between the backstory and the movie isn't 100% clear yet, as well as what happens after of course (aside from the sound clip after the credits).

If you want a plot or backstory, read the ARG information to see about the kelp, slusho, satellite, etc... The movie is a part of the puzzle, it shows a human perspective from what is going on. It's another part of the puzzle. Everyone knows a lot more now than they did before, but much like with Lost, there are still some unaswered questions in the whole plot arc that are going to hopefully be revelaed eventually.

Just because the movie went way over your head doesn't mean it didn't have a plot. As the quote stated earlier, if you would have prefered a backstory and Ben Affleck coming in to save the day with Bruckheimer style explosions, then the movie isn't for you. If you want to look at it as reality and how people would react to something major happening with nobody having any idea what to do but survive, it's one person's tale of the event.

it's pretty original and had me pretty excited once the action picked up, but then it went downhill towards the end =\

just came back from watching it... It was badass! I agree with Rukes all the way.

I missed the sound clip after the credits. What was it?
